Dolphins’ Ponga/Walsh Jumper Blockade

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow Eyes State of Origin Fullback Spot After Taste of Rep Glory

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is setting his sights firmly on reclaiming the Queensland Maroons’ coveted number one jersey for the upcoming State of Origin series. The Dolphins’ electrifying talent experienced a career-defining moment last year when he was thrust into the fullback role on the representative stage, and he’s made it clear he won’t be relinquishing that position without a fierce battle.

Historically, Tabuai-Fidow has often found himself playing in the centres for Queensland, with established stars like Reece Walsh and Kalyn Ponga frequently occupying the fullback position ahead of him. However, last year presented a unique opportunity. Ponga was initially selected by Maroons coach Billy Slater for the opening two games of the series. A subsequent injury to the Newcastle Knights playmaker paved the way for Tabuai-Fidow to step into the crucial number one jersey for the series decider.

This switch, while perhaps surprising to some given Walsh’s strong form at the time, did not faze Tabuai-Fidow. He remained focused on his own performance, shrugging off any external commentary. Queensland went on to secure a commanding 24-12 victory in that final game, successfully defending the State of Origin shield. Meanwhile, Reece Walsh continued his stellar club form, culminating in a premiership title with the Brisbane Broncos.

With the next State of Origin series still three months away, the question of who will wear the number one jersey for Queensland is undoubtedly a significant selection headache for Billy Slater. Tabuai-Fidow, however, is optimistic about his chances of retaining the role in 2026.

“It was a pinch-myself moment, especially having that number one on my back,” Tabuai-Fidow shared with 9News Queensland. “It is a position that I love and that I want to play. To be able to play in it at that arena, at that level, was pretty special. I’m chasing that (position) this year as well.”

Since his impactful appearance in game three of last year’s State of Origin series, Tabuai-Fidow hasn’t featured on the representative stage. This absence was due to a significant grade three MCL injury sustained while playing for the Dolphins. The 24-year-old also missed the recent All Stars game due to a shoulder concern and will not participate in the Dolphins’ final pre-season fixture against the Warriors this Friday.

Despite these recent setbacks, Tabuai-Fidow is adamant that his current periods on the sidelines are purely precautionary measures. “I am just monitoring it at the moment,” he stated. “I don’t want to risk getting it more hurt or injured. I will be sweet to go in round one.”

High Hopes for the Dolphins’ NRL Campaign

Beyond his individual ambitions for the State of Origin, the Dolphins’ star fullback harbours significant optimism for his club’s upcoming NRL season. He believes the team has cultivated a stronger sense of determination and hunger compared to previous years.

“The drive and the hunger that we have now is more than we have had over the last couple of years,” Tabuai-Fidow explained. “Where we are at now, we are excited. It should be a good year.”

The Dolphins are set to commence their NRL campaign against the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Suncorp Stadium on March 8th, with Tabuai-Fidow expected to be fit and firing for the opening round.

The fullback’s journey to the Origin number one jersey was a testament to his resilience and talent. After spending time in the centres, he demonstrated his versatility and capability when called upon. His performance in the crucial third game of the 2023 series showcased his defensive tenacity and attacking flair, proving he can handle the pressure of the biggest stage in rugby league.

The competition for the Maroons’ fullback spot is always intense, with a rich history of exceptional players vying for the role. However, Tabuai-Fidow’s confidence and his clear desire to wear the number one jersey suggest he is ready to embrace the challenge head-on. His ability to overcome injuries and maintain a positive outlook will be crucial as he aims to cement his place in the Queensland team.

The Dolphins themselves are also looking to build on their early progress in the NRL. With a growing squad and a renewed sense of purpose, they aim to establish themselves as a formidable force in the competition. Tabuai-Fidow’s leadership and his electrifying performances will be vital to their success. His return to full fitness and his continued development as a player will be keenly watched by fans and selectors alike as the NRL season unfolds. The fullback’s journey is one of ambition, perseverance, and a clear vision for what he wants to achieve in the game.
