Doriane Pin Makes History as First F1 Academy Champion to Test F1 Car

A Historic Moment for Doriane Pin

Reigning F1 Academy champion Doriane Pin made history by testing Formula 1 machinery for the first time, marking a significant milestone as the first woman to do so in three years and the first F1 Academy champion to take part in such an event. The 22-year-old, who is part of Mercedes’ driver development program, had the opportunity to drive the 2021-spec title-winning W12 on Friday at Silverstone’s National Circuit.

Pin completed 76 laps during her test session, which she described as an unforgettable experience. “Driving an F1 car for the first time was unreal,” she said. “I am very grateful to have been given this opportunity and to be surrounded by this incredible team. It was a unique opportunity and I made sure to enjoy my day to the fullest, along with doing the best job I could.”

While being a female driver doesn’t define her, Pin expressed pride in showing what women can achieve in motorsport. “It was great to show what we can do,” she added. “It was an extremely emotional day and I’m also thankful I was able to share this experience with my family.”

The W12, which was used to win the 2021 championship, was significantly different from the cars Pin has driven before. “Everything is different, bigger, and more powerful,” she noted. “I am glad I was able to build confidence lap after lap and show what I was capable of.”

A Promising Career Path

Pin, who won the F1 Academy title last year, is currently competing in the European Le Mans Series while also serving as a Mercedes development driver. Her performance during the test session was highly praised by Mercedes’ Trackside Engineering Director, Andrew Shovlin.

“It’s been great to have Doriane complete a day of testing with the W12,” Shovlin said. “It marks another major step on what is proving to be a very exciting and promising career and also makes her the first ever female driver of a Mercedes F1 car.”

Shovlin highlighted Pin’s preparation and professionalism, stating that the entire team was impressed. “Her preparation and professionalism has impressed the whole team and she should be really proud of what she has achieved. Whatever series you come from, it is always a massive step when getting into an F1 car but she looked at home from the very first laps and was able to enjoy driving the car on the limit.”

Looking Ahead

This historic test session not only showcases Pin’s talent but also highlights the growing opportunities for women in Formula 1. As the sport continues to evolve, moments like these are essential in breaking barriers and inspiring future generations of drivers.

Pin’s journey from F1 Academy champion to F1 test driver exemplifies the potential for young talent to rise through the ranks. With her determination and skill, she is setting a new standard for what is possible in the world of motorsport.
