Dufty’s Dragons Return: Spark Rekindled

Dufty’s NRL Comeback: A Full-Circle Moment with the Rabbitohs

Matt Dufty, a familiar face in Australian rugby league, has returned to the South Sydney Rabbitohs with a clear mission: to prove he still possesses the skill and determination required to compete at the highest level of the NRL. Dufty, who began his career with the St George Illawarra Dragons, spent four seasons in the top grade for the Red V before a move to the Bulldogs in 2022. His journey then took him overseas to the Warrington Wolves in England, where he spent the last four seasons. Now, an NRL lifeline from the Rabbitohs has presented Dufty with a golden opportunity to return to Australian shores, and he’s seizing it with both hands.

His recent performance in the Charity Shield, held at his former stomping ground, was a strong statement of intent. Dufty showcased his attacking prowess, notching a try, a try assist, and two line break assists, while also running for an impressive 232 metres. This outing served as a significant marker in his quest to re-establish himself in the NRL.

Aiming for the 100-Game Milestone

Speaking to NRL.com, Dufty expressed his deep desire to reach the 100-game milestone in his NRL career. “When I left, I didn’t think I’d come back,” Dufty confessed. “I didn’t think my first game back would be at WIN Stadium against the Dragons, so it’s a full-circle moment.”

The fullback admitted that his future was uncertain when he made the decision to return home. “I didn’t know what my future looked like when I decided to come home,” he said. “I’ve landed at the Rabbitohs, and you couldn’t write about it to win my first game back against the Dragons. It’s surreal, I’ve never won a Charity Shield before.”

With 94 NRL games already under his belt, the 100-game mark is a tangible goal. “I’m on 94 NRL games, I’d love to get to 100, so that’s the goal,” Dufty stated. He also acknowledged the emerging talent within the Rabbitohs squad, particularly Jye Gray. “They’ve got Jye Gray playing there and he’s electric. I’ve been watching him train the last few weeks and he’s a pretty special player.”

The Path Back to Redfern

Dufty’s return to Australia and subsequent signing with the Rabbitohs was facilitated by a conversation with former Dragon Ben Hornby. Seeking advice on his return to home soil, Dufty reached out to Hornby, which ultimately led to discussions with Souths’ head coach, Wayne Bennett.

“I decided to come home and called Benny Hornby just to ask him for some advice,” Dufty explained. “He spoke to Wayne and called me back the next day, said, ‘give Wayne a call’. It just went from there, we signed the Cup deal just to come in and train.”

Dufty is eager to make the most of this opportunity, understanding the competitive nature of the Rabbitohs’ roster. “I just want to put my best foot forward. They’ve got a stacked squad, I just wanted an opportunity and I’m very grateful for it.”

Looking Ahead: Sea Eagles Showdown

Following his strong Charity Shield performance, Dufty is expected to feature for the Rabbitohs this weekend when they face the Manly Sea Eagles in Mudgee. Both teams are anticipated to field formidable line-ups, promising an engaging contest as the NRL season edges closer. Dufty’s inclusion will be keenly watched as he continues his campaign to cement his place in the top grade.
