EastEnders’ Heartfelt Homage to June Brown

EastEnders Honours Beloved Dot Cotton with Heartfelt Canteen Renaming

Albert Square’s iconic canteen has been given a new name, On The Dot, as a poignant tribute to the late June Brown, the inimitable actress behind the much-loved character Dot Cotton. The decision, which bosses believe Brown herself would have heartily approved of, celebrates her enduring legacy on and off-screen.

Brown, a cornerstone of the BBC soap for decades, passed away in 2022 at the age of 95. Her presence was deeply felt by cast and crew alike, and the on-set eatery was a frequent haunt for the star. The renaming of the canteen is a fitting acknowledgement of her fondness for the space, often where she would be found holding court over cups of tea and, as was her prerogative, cigarettes, with fellow actors captivated by her wisdom and wit.

This heartfelt gesture comes as the world approaches 2027, the year June Brown would have celebrated her 100th birthday. The timing underscores the enduring impact she had on the show and its dedicated fanbase.

A Character in Every Sense: Memories from the Canteen

Colleagues have shared fond anecdotes, painting a vivid picture of June Brown’s larger-than-life personality. Michelle Collins, who portrays Cindy Beale, recalled Brown’s robust health, despite her known enjoyment of red wine and cigarettes. “I know she smoked and loved her red wine, but she was very healthy,” Collins remarked. She even recounted witnessing Brown performing pelvic floor exercises on a canteen trolley, a testament to her spirited nature.

John Altman, famously known as Nasty Nick, echoed the sentiment of Brown’s popularity on set. He described how a simple walk to the canteen could take up to half an hour, not due to distance, but because Brown would invariably stop to chat with numerous cast and crew members along the way. Her magnetic personality meant she was always surrounded by admirers, eager to soak in her stories and insights.

Special Privileges: June Brown’s Smoking on Set

It has also been revealed that June Brown was afforded a unique privilege during her time on EastEnders: she was permitted to smoke on set. Former co-star Katie Jarvis shared her memories of Brown’s on-set habits. “I always remember, June sat down, and she was just smoking and smoking… Yeah, she was the only one that was allowed!” Jarvis explained.

Jarvis further elaborated on Brown’s professionalism, noting how she would seamlessly transition from smoking to her acting duties. “She’d always be working as an actress daily. She put her cigarette down, went on the set, and she’s reading these pages of dialogue… She knew all of her lines, never got them wrong, and obviously, she was always allowed to walk around smoking!” This special allowance highlights the immense respect and affection the production team had for Brown, recognising her dedication and the fact that it never impacted her performance.

Honouring Dot Cotton: A Funeral On-Screen

Following June Brown’s passing, EastEnders paid a touching tribute by airing a funeral for her beloved character, Dot Cotton. In a deeply moving scene, June’s real-life children were among those depicted mourning the loss on screen.

The decision to stage Dot’s funeral was made in consultation with Brown’s family. It was revealed that June Brown had expressed a desire for her character not to be killed off while she was still alive. After her death, EastEnders bosses approached her family, who gave their blessing for the on-screen funeral, understanding it was what June would have wanted.

Executive producer Chris Kershaw commented on the sensitive decision, stating, “She did of course know that when she did leave us, it was the right thing to do. After some time, we couldn’t put it off much longer. We spoke to June’s family who knew it was what she would have wanted.” This collaborative approach ensured that Dot Cotton’s final on-screen moments were handled with the utmost respect and dignity, honouring both the character and the actress who brought her to life.

EastEnders continues to air on Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One, with episodes also available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
