Eels hit hard as star forced off with severe pain

Ryley Smith’s Injury Raises Concerns for Eels

Ryley Smith, the Parramatta Eels’ hooker, is likely to face a period on the sidelines after sustaining a suspected sternum injury during the team’s 36-14 loss to the Warriors. The incident occurred early in the match when Smith was assisted off the field following a brutal tackle by Dallin Watene-Zelezniak.

Smith had shown great energy in the opening minutes of the game, but his performance came to an abrupt halt after he was taken down by Watene-Zelezniak. The Warriors’ player charged forward immediately, and Smith was unable to get back up after being floored. Teammates quickly alerted the club’s trainers to the severity of the situation, with Smith visibly in pain.

Greg Alexander, a commentator on Fox League, expressed concern about Smith’s condition. He noted, “This does not look good. He is a tough little bugger, he has been full of energy so far. He is in awful discomfort right now. He is in some serious, serious pain.”

Two trainers were required to assist Smith from the field, with his left arm stabilised on the shoulder of one of the club’s staff members. Tallyn da Silva then took his place on the field. This is not the first time Smith has faced injury concerns this season, as he previously suffered a sternum injury in round seven against the Bulldogs. Despite that, he managed to play through the injury and returned a week later to face Manly.

Eels coach Jason Ryles remained confident about Smith’s recovery. “He has a sore sternum, but he will be right,” Ryles said after the match. “I’m not sure (if it’s worse than his previous sternum injuries). We will have to wait and see after scans.”

At the time of Smith’s injury, the Eels had the upper hand over their visiting rivals, with Ronald Volkman scoring a try in the fourth minute. However, the Warriors quickly capitalized on the late changes made by the Eels due to Smith’s injury, scoring three consecutive tries.

Josh Addo-Carr attempted to reduce the gap before halftime, but his effort was denied by the Bunker, which confirmed he had been held up in goal by Watene-Zelezniak. The Warriors extended their lead to 16-6 after the half-time break, with Jackson Ford and Alofiana Khan-Pereira adding to their score.

The Eels struggled to stay competitive in the second half, with Watene-Zelezniak intercepting a pass to set up a try for Roger Tuivasa-Sheck. Tanah Boyd tried to seal the result with a two-point field goal, but his attempt was charged down. Ultimately, the Warriors secured a 36-14 victory.
