Elections: The Frontline Against Autocracy

Election Workshop Highlights Need for Vigilance Against Autocratic Forces

Sylhet, Bangladesh – A call to actively counter autocratic forces through the upcoming national election was issued by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Speaking at the inauguration of an election-focused training workshop for journalists in Sylhet, Hasan acknowledged the continued presence of defeated elements but emphasized their diminished strength compared to the forces driving democratic progress.

The workshop, organized by the Bangladesh Press Institute (PIB), aimed to equip journalists with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively cover the impending parliamentary election and referendum. Hasan, the chief guest at the event held at the Sylhet Press Club, stressed the importance of spontaneous public participation to safeguard democracy.

“The defeated forces are still active, but their strength is much weaker than the forces behind the uprising,” Hasan stated, underscoring that the current government is committed to holding the polls despite facing various challenges. She urged citizens to actively engage in the electoral process, scheduled for February 12th, as a crucial step in protecting democratic values.

The program was presided over by Faruk Wasif, Director General of the PIB. Several distinguished guests, including Information Secretary Farzana Mahbub, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam, Sylhet Press Club President Muktabis Un Noor, and Sylhet Metropolitan Journalists Union General Secretary Khaled Ahmed, delivered remarks as special guests. The proceedings were expertly managed by Mohammad Sirajul Islam, General Secretary of the Sylhet Press Club.

Information Secretary Farzana Mahbub, addressing the assembled journalists, highlighted the symbiotic relationship between the media and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, describing them as integral parts of the same entity. She articulated that media professionals are poised to play a pivotal role in ensuring the integrity and fairness of the upcoming 13th parliamentary election and referendum.

Mahbub issued a direct appeal to journalists, urging them to act as bulwarks against the spread of rumours and misinformation. She implored them to champion truth and justice through the diligent practice of responsible and investigative journalism.

The workshop saw participation from approximately 50 journalists representing the Sylhet Press Club and other media organizations in the region.
