this Monday ahead of facing AS Monaco (8th) at the Stade Louis II tomorrow (kick-off at 9pm, CET) in the first leg of the 2025-2026 Champions League play-off (second leg on Wednesday, February 25). On the sidelines of this event, the Spaniard also spoke to
PSG TV.
Navigating Defeat and Embracing Reality
When questioned about the group’s mentality, particularly after a setback, Luis Enrique acknowledged the inherent difficulty of processing a loss. “It’s always difficult to handle a defeat,” he stated. However, he quickly pivoted to a more analytical perspective, emphasising the need for thorough examination. Enrique pointed out that in a recent match, the team generated a comparable number of scoring opportunities to a previous dominant 5-0 victory against Marseille. This comparison underscored his view that football’s unpredictable nature means results aren’t always a direct reflection of performance.
“But you have to analyze it thoroughly,” Enrique elaborated. “And I can say that we created just as many chances as against Marseille. We won 5-0 then, and now we lost. It’s tough.” He resonated with the desire of both the team and the supporters to secure victories and consistently find the back of the net. Yet, he tempered this ambition with a dose of realism. “What we want, like the fans, is to win every match and score lots of goals. But football doesn’t work like that.” This statement highlights a pragmatic approach to the sport, acknowledging that even with strong performances, outcomes can vary.
Facing French Opposition: A Consistent Mindset
The discussion then shifted to the specific challenge of playing against another French club, AS Monaco. Luis Enrique was adamant that this distinction held no particular significance for his team’s strategic approach. “For us, nothing,” he declared when asked about the difference. His reasoning centred on maintaining an unwavering focus on the immediate task at hand.
“Because our mentality isn’t about thinking about anything else; the important thing is tomorrow’s match,” Enrique explained. The team’s intention is to approach the game with an offensive mindset, aiming to dictate play. He acknowledged Monaco’s quality as a formidable opponent. “We’re going to play it with the mindset of attacking. They’re a very good team, with top-level players. We know them.”
Despite the upcoming Champions League play-off, Enrique reiterated the importance of concentrating on the domestic league fixture. He admitted that the prospect of a Champions League tie against a French opponent presented a different dynamic, but maintained that the current priority was clear. “It’s difficult to think about the Champions League against a French club; it’s different. But now is the time to perform.” This emphasis on the present moment and the need to deliver on the pitch, regardless of the opponent or competition, is a cornerstone of his coaching philosophy.
A Message of Gratitude to the Fans
The press conference concluded with Luis Enrique taking the opportunity to express his appreciation for the PSG supporters. He described them as “incredible” and conveyed the genuine pleasure derived from their backing. However, he also used this platform to underscore the team’s continued drive to exceed expectations.
“We still feel like we need to give even more energy to win,” Enrique stated, signalling a commitment to relentless effort. The unwavering nature of the fans’ support was a key point, providing a strong foundation for the team’s ambitions. “Their support is unwavering.” This sentiment suggests a powerful symbiotic relationship between the club and its fanbase, a crucial element for sustained success. The coach’s words aimed to both acknowledge and galvanise, reinforcing the collective aspiration for triumph.
