A significant review into clinical governance at Epworth Hospital is set to be led by a prominent South Australian health commissioner, following serious allegations that a leading gynaecologist performed unnecessary surgeries for endometriosis. Epworth HealthCare has announced the formation of an expert panel to conduct this crucial investigation, which was initiated after a television exposé detailed claims that Dr. Simon Gordon allegedly proceeded with operations even when pathology reports indicated minimal or no endometriosis.
Dr. Gordon, however, has consistently maintained his commitment to ethical and responsible practice. He has stated that he “never performed surgery to treat endometriosis or any other condition unless I was absolutely convinced it was in the patient’s best interest and to improve their overall quality of life.”
Expert Panel Assembled for Clinical Governance Review
Epworth HealthCare has appointed a distinguished panel of experts to chair this review. The panel will be led by Professor Keith McNeil, a highly respected figure in the Australian health landscape. Professor McNeil serves as the commissioner and chief executive of South Australia’s Commission on Excellence and Innovation. Epworth HealthCare has lauded him as “a nationally respected health system leader with a deep expertise in clinical governance and system reform.”
Adding to the panel’s formidable expertise, Safer Care Victoria has nominated Beverley Vollenhoven. Ms. Vollenhoven is recognised as a leading gynaecologist and an internationally acclaimed specialist in women’s health and the care of endometriosis. Her inclusion is expected to bring invaluable insights into the specific clinical areas under scrutiny.
Further bolstering the panel’s credentials, Professor Alan Lam from New South Wales has also been appointed. Epworth describes Professor Lam as “an experienced senior clinician with extensive expertise in surgical practice, clinical governance and medical leadership,” underscoring his broad understanding of the complexities within surgical settings.
Scope of the Review
The comprehensive review will concentrate on the gynaecological services provided at Epworth Hospital. Key areas of examination will include:
- Doctor Credentialing Processes: Investigating how medical practitioners, particularly gynaecologists, are vetted and approved to practice at the hospital.
- Handling of Patient and Staff Concerns: Scrutinising the mechanisms in place for addressing complaints and concerns raised by both patients and hospital staff.
- Oversight of Clinical Practice: Evaluating the systems and procedures used to monitor and ensure the quality and appropriateness of clinical decision-making and procedures.
Patient Perspective Integrated into the Review
Recognising the critical importance of lived experience, the review panel will also include two “consumer advocates with lived experience” in women’s health, specifically concerning endometriosis. This inclusion aims to ensure that the patient perspective is directly incorporated into the review process, providing a vital counterpoint to clinical and administrative viewpoints.
To further support the integration of lived experience, the review will seek guidance from Women’s Health Victoria. This collaboration is designed to enrich the review with a deeper understanding of the impact of these issues on individuals.
Addressing Past Patient Concerns
Previously, some former patients had voiced their disappointment and anger at not being formally invited to participate in the review, either through interviews or written submissions. These patients expressed to the ABC their feeling that the hospital’s response had been inadequate and that Epworth should proactively reach out to all former patients of Dr. Simon Gordon.
In response to these concerns, Epworth has stated that it is now contacting former patients of Dr. Gordon. The purpose of these communications is to provide information about available support services. This includes facilitating access to their medical records at no cost and assisting them in connecting with other relevant services.
Andrew Stripp, the Chief Executive of Epworth Group, acknowledged the profound distress caused by the allegations. In a statement, he described the concerns as “deeply upsetting.”
“We have taken the time to ensure the right independent expertise is in place to undertake this review,” Mr. Stripp said. “It will examine how our governance systems are working today and whether there are areas we can strengthen.” He further committed to “release the findings publicly and act on the recommendations.”
Mr. Stripp also conveyed empathy for those affected, stating, “The pain, loss and anger being expressed is deeply confronting, and it is something I take very seriously.”
Broader Investigations Underway
Beyond the hospital’s internal review, the medical regulator, AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), is also conducting its own investigation into Dr. Gordon. This includes a review of previous complaints lodged with the agency regarding the surgeon’s practice. As part of its investigation, AHPRA has formally requested thousands of medical records and associated documents.
The Victorian government has also established a dedicated support line, operated by Women’s Health Victoria, to assist patients who may have been affected by these allegations.
