A New Chapter for Simon Patterson
As Erin Patterson remains incarcerated at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre for the murder of three relatives, her estranged husband, Simon Patterson, is preparing to share his side of the story through a memoir. This upcoming book is expected to provide insight into the events that led to the tragic deaths of Don and Gail Patterson, as well as Heather Wilkinson, and the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson.
Simon’s spokesperson, Jessica O’Donnell, shared details about the memoir with The Guardian, stating that it will allow Simon to express his perspective on the case. “He will allow his story to be told through the book and that’s how he wants his words to be heard,” she said. O’Donnell also mentioned that more information about the memoir, including its publisher, will be revealed in the coming weeks. However, she emphasized that Simon himself will not be involved in any announcements related to the book.
First Time Speaking Out
In July 2023, Erin Patterson was found guilty of killing her in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, during a lunch at her home in Leongatha, Victoria. She served them a beef Wellington laced with death cap mushrooms, which led to their deaths. Later that year, she was sentenced to life in prison with a non-parole period of 33 years. She is currently appealing the sentence, claiming there was a “substantial miscarriage of justice” during her Supreme Court trial.
This memoir marks the first time Simon has spoken publicly about the case. However, he had previously expressed frustration during the trial about not being able to discuss the four attempted murder charges that were brought against him. Between 2021 and 2022, he was accused of attempting to kill Simon on four occasions using food laced with poison, but these charges were dropped last August due to a lack of evidence.
During the trial, Simon expressed his confusion about being restricted from speaking about the charges. “I’m sitting here, half thinking about the things I’m not allowed to talk about and I understand – I don’t actually understand why,” he said. “It seems bizarre to me. But it is what it is.”
