Bombers Under Fire: Club Legend Slams “Scary” Early Season Woes
Essendon’s winless start to the AFL season has drawn the ire of club legend Matthew Lloyd, who has delivered a scathing assessment of the struggling Bombers. Following a brutal 63-point thrashing at the hands of Port Adelaide on Sunday, and an equally disheartening 62-point loss to Hawthorn in Round 1, Essendon finds itself languishing at the bottom of the ladder with a concerning percentage of just 55.
The recent defeat to Port Adelaide was marred by a litany of unforced errors and a defence that was repeatedly exposed by the Power’s potent attack. However, the most alarming aspect for the Bombers’ loyal fanbase was coach Brad Scott’s candid post-game admission regarding a perceived lack of effort from his players, even at this nascent stage of the campaign.
“We’re not hard-nosed enough in defence … that’s not just the defenders, that’s all over the ground,” Scott stated to reporters. “I’m a coach who very rarely questions a lack of effort and a lack of fight. You know these guys well enough that they’ll always give that. But there’s no doubt we’re demoralised and that can appear to look like a lack of effort and a lack of fight.”
Lloyd, a prominent pundit and former Essendon premiership star, echoed Scott’s concerns, agreeing that the team is simply not performing at an AFL standard. He described the situation as “massively concerning” for the Bombers, especially just two games into their new campaign.
Lloyd’s Harsh Reality Check for Essendon
“The scary part is it’s round two, so it’s not as if we’re at round 16-17 and your season’s over,” Lloyd told afl.com.au. “They’ve played a couple of games and they’ve played with no passion. There’s a lack of confidence, lack of belief, it seems like a lack of understanding.”
He elaborated on his observations, noting a distinct absence of defensive intensity. “I don’t see the intent to push back (in defence). It’s a hard watch because it’s not AFL level, it’s not AFL standard. And the coach pretty much conceded we’ve got players that aren’t working hard enough.”
The Bombers will be desperate for a significant turnaround when they face fellow strugglers North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium this Saturday night. The Kangaroos, despite their own challenges, will enter the clash as favourites. They managed to stun Port Adelaide in Round 1 before succumbing to West Coast on Sunday, a defeat that saw them squander a five-goal lead against last year’s wooden spoon recipients.

A Glimmer of Hope Amidst the Gloom
While the overall picture is bleak, Lloyd did identify a select few players who could hold their heads high. He singled out emerging talents Nate Caddy, Isaac Kako, and Archie Roberts as standouts from the Hawthorn thrashing. However, he stressed that his criticism stems from a deep-seated passion for the club and a desire to see them succeed. Lloyd issued a challenge to some of the club’s more established stars, urging them to demonstrate what it truly means to wear the Essendon guernsey.
“I’m tired of doing it to them because I just want them to be good and want them to be great,” Lloyd admitted. “You want to turn up on Monday and say, ‘How good were they?'”
He continued, “Because I loved (Nate) Caddy, I loved (Isaac) Kako, I thought (Archie) Roberts was sensational. But they’re three kids – babies. They got nothing from the top end and I just see a side that’s just so low on confidence and they don’t know how to get out of their own way at the moment.”
The Bombers’ current predicament is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by teams at the start of a new era, and the stark reality of AFL competition. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Essendon can rebound from this demoralising start or if these early-season struggles will define their campaign. The focus will undoubtedly be on the players’ response, both individually and collectively, as they aim to reignite their season and recapture the belief that has seemingly evaporated.
