Ethiopia’s Digital Leap: Scholars Unveil Economic Transformation

Addis Ababa, December 26, 2025 — Scholars from Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU) have highlighted the transformative impact of Ethiopia’s digital initiatives on the country’s economic growth and business environment. These efforts are driven by the “Digital Ethiopia 2025” strategy, which has already led to notable progress in several areas.

The strategy has focused on strengthening digital public infrastructure, expanding financial services, and modernizing e-governance systems. According to experts, these achievements have created a solid foundation for future digital development in the nation.

In an exclusive interview, Assistant Professor Lemlem Kassa, Head of the Software Engineering Department at AASTU, pointed out that the “Digital Ethiopia 2025” initiative reached its full completion. This success was recognized during the launch of the “Digital Ethiopia 2030” strategy, where Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed confirmed the 100% implementation rate of the previous plan.

One of the key components of the national digital transformation is the Mesob One-Stop Service Center. This initiative aims to streamline government services by integrating them into a single platform, making it easier for citizens to access multiple services without having to visit different offices.

“The integration of various services under one window allows us to collect a large amount of data,” she explained. “This not only helps in managing data more efficiently but also enhances security and reduces costs while improving customer satisfaction.”

She further emphasized that the center benefits both local and international investors by eliminating the need to navigate through multiple service points. This streamlined approach supports a more favorable business climate, especially as the “Digital Ethiopia 2030” strategy is expected to enhance service delivery even further.

Professor Kassa also mentioned the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in driving economic growth. She noted that AI can be applied in sectors such as health, agriculture, and education, contributing significantly to the country’s development.

“By incorporating AI technologies, we can reduce costs and unnecessary workloads, making it easier for people to access services through mobile devices or laptops,” she added.

Habib Mohammed, Head of the AI and Robotics Center of Excellence at AASTU, echoed similar sentiments. He stated that the “Digital Ethiopia 2025” strategy laid a strong foundation for the country’s digital economy. It has improved the accessibility and speed of government services, modernizing various operations across the board.

Additionally, the strategy has contributed to building an inclusive financial system, making digital payments and mobile financial services more accessible. It has also encouraged greater participation from the private sector in the economy.

The “Digital Ethiopia 2030” (DE2030) strategy is the next phase of the national digital transformation. Launched after the successful completion of the 2025 initiative, DE2030 aims to transform the entire economy through inclusive, people-centered digital governance, with a focus on digital infrastructure.
