Ex-India Captain Doubts Riyan Parag’s RR Spot After Casual Batting Performance

Kris Srikkanth Criticises Riyan Parag’s Performance in IPL 2026

Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth has voiced his concerns over Riyan Parag’s role in the Rajasthan Royals (RR) lineup following what he described as a “casual” approach to batting during the team’s match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2026. Parag, who had the opportunity to lead from the front, was dismissed for just 3 runs in the game. Despite RR securing a six-wicket victory, propelled by Dhruv Jurel’s explosive 81* off 43 balls and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 78 off 26, Srikkanth expressed disappointment with Parag’s performance.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former BCCI chief selector suggested that Parag’s captaincy is the main reason he remains in the playing XI.

“Riyan Parag is only playing because of his captaincy. He got out carelessly, trying to play in style. Despite playing several seasons, he’s only performed well a few times. His dismissal was due to arrogance. He could have shown more responsibility and worked on getting back to form,” he said.

Srikkanth emphasised that if Parag had played with more responsibility rather than attempting a “reckless” shot, RR would have completed the chase much faster.

“Jurel played an effortless knock, yet he matched Sooryavanshi shot for shot. His stroke play was remarkable. Having Jurel at No. 3 is a significant advantage for them. However, they should have wrapped up the match by the 16th over,” he added.

Key Performances in the Match

RR’s dominant win marked their fourth consecutive victory, while it handed RCB their first loss of the season. Chasing a target of 202, RR were powered by a rapid 78 from Sooryavanshi and an unbeaten 81 from Jurel. Their 108-run partnership guided the team to the target in just 18 overs, with Ravindra Jadeja adding a valuable 24*.

Earlier, RCB posted 201/8, with contributions from Rajat Patidar (63) and a late cameo by Venkatesh Iyer. RCB fell short against RR’s strong batting performance.

Analysis of the Game

The match highlighted the importance of consistency and composure under pressure. While Jurel and Sooryavanshi delivered standout performances, Parag’s dismissal raised questions about his decision-making and focus. Srikkanth pointed out that Parag’s approach lacked the necessary discipline required at this level of competition.

  • Srikkanth argued that Parag’s captaincy is the primary factor keeping him in the team, despite his inconsistent performances.
  • He stressed that Parag needs to take more responsibility and improve his technique to justify his place in the lineup.
  • The former selector also praised Jurel and Sooryavanshi for their crucial contributions to the win.

Implications for the Team

With RR continuing their winning streak, the focus will now shift to maintaining this momentum. However, the team may need to reassess its strategy, particularly in terms of batting order and player selection. Parag’s performance in the upcoming matches will be closely watched, as it could determine whether he continues to be a key player or if changes are needed in the lineup.

Looking Ahead

As the tournament progresses, teams will face tougher challenges, and consistency will become even more critical. For RR, the challenge will be to build on their current form while addressing any weaknesses in their batting department. With players like Jurel and Sooryavanshi showing great potential, the team has the foundation to compete strongly in the remaining matches.
