Victims’ Advocate Slams “Deeply Offensive” Social Media Posts by Former Olympian
A prominent victims’ rights advocate has voiced strong criticism, labelling social media posts by former Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis as “deeply offensive” following his sentencing for driving the vehicle that tragically killed his wife. Dennis, 35, received a suspended jail sentence in May of last year after his wife, Melissa Hoskins, 32, was fatally struck by his car near their home in Medindie, an inner-northern suburb of Adelaide, on December 30, 2023. Hoskins, herself an accomplished Olympic cyclist, sustained severe injuries and sadly passed away at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
The controversy erupted when Dennis shared images on his Instagram account. One post featured his Porsche, a different vehicle from the one involved in the incident, accompanied by the caption “what an absolute weapon”.
Sarah Quick, the Victims’ Rights Commissioner, deemed the caption highly inappropriate given the devastating circumstances. In a public statement, Quick asserted, “This is a deeply offensive comment that demonstrates a clear lack of insight into the real and lasting impact of the harm he has caused.” She further elaborated, “It also reflects a profound lack of respect for Melissa and her family, who continue to live with the consequences of that harm every day.”
The former professional cyclist followed up with a second Instagram post, this time showcasing his children, also with a caption that read: “Two absolute weapons.”
Nine.com.au has reached out to Rohan Dennis for comment regarding these posts.
Dennis had previously pleaded guilty to committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm. However, he was not held criminally responsible for his wife’s death. The court handed him a 17-month suspended prison term, coupled with a two-year good behaviour bond. Additionally, he has been disqualified from driving for two years.
During the sentencing submissions in the SA District Court last year, Melissa Hoskins’ mother, Amanda, shared poignant words. She expressed her belief that her daughter had loved Dennis and stated, “and I know that you would never intentionally hurt her.” Amanda Hoskins characterised the event as a “tragic accident” and advised Dennis, “Your temper is your downfall and needs to be addressed.”
Rohan Dennis enjoyed a distinguished career in professional cycling. He secured two world titles in the road time trial discipline. His Olympic achievements include a silver medal in the team pursuit at the 2012 London Olympics and a bronze medal in the road time trial at the Tokyo Olympics.

Navigating the Aftermath:
The legal proceedings and subsequent sentencing highlight the complex emotional and legal landscape following such a tragedy. While Dennis was not found criminally liable for his wife’s death, the court acknowledged the harm caused by his actions. The suspended sentence and good behaviour bond reflect a judicial approach that balances accountability with the acknowledgment of a tragic accident.
The statements from the Victims’ Rights Commissioner underscore the profound impact such incidents have on families and the importance of empathy and respect in public discourse, especially when dealing with sensitive matters involving loss and grief. The focus on Dennis’s social media activity brings to the forefront the ongoing pain and distress experienced by the victim’s family and the broader community’s expectations regarding behaviour in the wake of such a devastating event.
The public’s attention to this case also serves as a reminder of the need for awareness and support for those affected by domestic violence and road trauma. The availability of services like 1800RESPECT is crucial for individuals and families navigating difficult circumstances.
The case of Rohan Dennis and Melissa Hoskins is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating consequences that can arise from actions, even when unintended. It also brings into sharp focus the challenges faced by families in seeking justice and healing, and the public’s role in fostering a compassionate and understanding environment.
