Expert Warns: Multiple Taxes Strangle Businesses

Nigerian Businesses Grapple with Crippling Multiple Taxation, Logistics Expert Warns

The Nigerian business landscape is facing significant headwinds due to a pervasive issue of multiple taxation and levies, according to Wole Elusakin, Chief Executive Officer of Pomegranate Nigeria Limited. Speaking at the company’s recent management budget session and retreat in Abeokuta, Elusakin issued a stark warning about the detrimental impact these charges are having on private enterprises nationwide. He called upon the Federal Government to urgently address this challenge by harmonising taxes and streamlining billing processes to foster economic growth.

Elusakin highlighted the practical difficulties faced by logistics operators, explaining that their trucks are subjected to levies in virtually every state and local government area they traverse. “We have to contend with multiple billings,” he stated. “This is because in each local government or state we drive through with our trucks, we have to pay. So, there is a need for the Federal Government to come in and unify the taxes.”

This fragmented system of taxation, he elaborated, directly inflates the cost of goods for consumers. “All the costs incurred are invariably passed to our clients, who in turn pass them to the consumers, thereby increasing the financial burden on them.”

While expressing cautious optimism about the Federal Government’s new tax law, which he hopes will alleviate the problem of overlapping taxes and levies, Elusakin stressed the critical need for enhanced public communication and enlightenment. “We expect the Federal Government to communicate the policy effectively, so we can understand how it will impact our business,” he urged.

Pomegranate Nigeria Limited Charts a Course for 2026 with “Impossible is Nothing”

The recent management session in Abeokuta served as a crucial platform for Pomegranate Nigeria Limited to strategise and galvanise its team for the upcoming year. Under the ambitious theme for 2026, “Impossible is Nothing,” the retreat focused on strengthening team cohesion and re-energising employees to meet ambitious targets.

Elusakin described the annual budget session and retreat as a cornerstone of the company’s operational cycle. “At the beginning of every year, we have what we call a budget session, which is usually characterised by a retreat and a bonding session. This team bonding brought us to Abeokuta, where we visited the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, the Wildlife Park and the Olumo Rock for the mountain-climbing experience.” These activities were designed not only for leisure but also to foster a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among staff.

Further enhancing the motivational aspect of the retreat, popular Nollywood actor Odunlade Adekola was invited to inspire the workforce. “He is a successful actor and we expect that we can leverage his fame and draw some inspiration from him to be able to push into the new year,” Elusakin commented.

Acknowledging the economic challenges faced by businesses in 2025, Elusakin offered words of encouragement to entrepreneurs. He urged them to persevere and adopt innovative strategies to navigate the complexities of the market and ensure their survival.
