Philippines Secure World Cup Berth with Stellar Performance, Featuring Brisbane Roar’s Angela Beard
The Philippines women’s national football team, guided by Australian coach Mark Torcaso, has officially booked their ticket to the FIFA Women’s World Cup, thanks to a pivotal victory over Uzbekistan. A standout performance from Brisbane Roar defender Angela Beard was instrumental in this historic achievement, as the Filipinas secured their place in the prestigious tournament with a convincing 2-0 win.
The crucial qualifying match, held on the Gold Coast, saw the Philippines display a blend of grit and clinical finishing. After a first half marked by near misses and frustratingly off-target attempts, the team ignited in the second half with a rapid-fire scoring spree that ultimately sealed their World Cup dreams.
Beard, a formidable presence at the back for the Brisbane Roar, proved to be a game-changer on the offensive front as well. She came agonizingly close to scoring on two occasions during the opening period. The first was a promising opportunity, and the second, a mistimed tap-in from close range, left her visibly disappointed. However, her persistence paid off handsomely just after halftime. In the 47th minute, Beard seized a far more challenging chance, striking the ball with power and precision into the roof of the net, breaking the deadlock and igniting the Filipinas’ charge.

Following Beard’s opening goal, her teammate Jaclyn Sawicki doubled the lead just five minutes later. Sawicki demonstrated excellent awareness and skill, expertly redirecting a header back across Uzbekistan’s goalkeeper, Maftuna Jonimqulova, and finding the side netting to put the Philippines firmly in control. These decisive goals came after a first half where the team struggled to find their rhythm, managing only one shot on target from a total of nine attempts.
The frustration of the first half was palpable on the sidelines, with coach Torcaso, previously lauded as the A-League Women’s coach of the year with Western United in 2022, visibly expressing his concern over his team’s wastefulness. However, the double strike after the break provided a significant release of tension and a clear indication of their World Cup aspirations.
The Philippines’ journey to this qualification was not without its challenges. They began their tournament campaign with a narrow 1-0 loss to the eventual finalists, Australia. Despite also succumbing to a defeat against semi-finalists South Korea, their resilience shone through with a crucial victory against Iran, propelling them into the quarter-finals. It was in the quarter-finals that they faced a formidable Japanese side, who secured a dominant 7-0 win. This result, however, did not diminish the Philippines’ spirit and instead propelled them into a last-gasp World Cup qualifier – a match they ultimately triumphed in.
Mark Torcaso, who took over the reins from fellow Australian and former Matildas coach Alen Stajcic, has had a significant impact on the team’s fortunes. His leadership not only guided them to this World Cup qualification but also saw them achieve a gold medal at the South East Asian Games last year, further cementing his influence on the team’s recent successes. The Philippines’ qualification marks a significant milestone for women’s football in the nation, inspiring a new generation of players and fans.
