After three years of planning and more than two decades without significant changes, residents in the Syracuse area are expressing optimism about the redesigned public bus transportation routes under Centro. The Central New York Regional Transportation Authority recently held the final public hearing for the nearly complete re-design of the bus route plan, which serves communities in Syracuse and surrounding areas.
The initiative, known as the Better Bus Onondaga Initiative, is focused on improving the efficiency of current bus routes, introducing new service lines, and discontinuing underutilized or low-performing routes. This comprehensive approach aims to better meet the needs of the community while streamlining operations.

One of the most notable features of the plan is the introduction of three new “move” zones located just outside the city limits. These zones will operate without a fixed schedule, offering flexible daily service through the Centro bus app. Residents can use the app to reserve rides between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. This innovative model is designed to provide greater convenience and accessibility for those living in these areas.

“This is the final listening session before we take it to our board for approval of this plan,” said Bren Diass, Vice President of Public Affairs and Planning for Centro. “We’re hoping to roll it out and launch next summer—summer of 2027.”
Diass emphasized that the plan was largely developed based on public feedback gathered over the past three years. This period of engagement is coming to an end this month, with public comments no longer being accepted after April 30. Those interested in submitting feedback can do so through the official Centro website.
Key Components of the Better Bus Onondaga Initiative
- Improved Efficiency: The plan focuses on optimizing existing bus routes to reduce travel times and improve overall service reliability.
- New Service Lines: Additional routes are proposed to serve underserved areas and connect key destinations such as schools, shopping centers, and healthcare facilities.
- Discontinued Routes: Some low-performing or unused routes will be eliminated to allocate resources more effectively.
The Move Zones
- Flexible Scheduling: Unlike traditional bus routes, the move zones will not have set schedules. Instead, they will offer on-demand service through the Centro app.
- App-Based Reservations: Residents can book rides using the app, providing a more personalized and convenient transportation experience.
- Operating Hours: Rides will be available from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, ensuring coverage during peak commuting hours.
Next Steps
- Public Hearing: The final public hearing was held to gather last-minute feedback and ensure transparency in the decision-making process.
- Board Approval: Once approved by the board, the plan will move forward to implementation.
- Launch Date: If approved, the new system is expected to launch in the summer of 2027.
The Better Bus Onondaga Initiative represents a significant step forward in modernizing public transportation in the region. By incorporating community input and leveraging technology, Centro aims to create a more efficient, accessible, and user-friendly transit system for all residents.
