Five Fugitives at Large After Police Stop Kiambu Burglary Attempt

A Bold Burglary Attempt Foiled in Ruiru’s Destiny Area

On a quiet Saturday morning in the Ruiru’s Destiny area of Kiambu county, police officers from the Gatong’ora police station made a significant breakthrough in a daring burglary attempt. The incident occurred during a period of increased crime activity, as families across the region prepare for Christmas and New Year festivities by traveling to their rural homes.

The operation began in the early hours of December 27 when patrolling officers noticed five suspects attempting to force entry into a local shop. As the officers approached, the suspects tried to flee in a waiting vehicle. A tense chase followed, with police firing at the rear tires of the saloon car to bring it to a stop.

The suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, disappearing into the surrounding neighborhood. A thorough search of the impounded car revealed a well-prepared toolkit for criminal activities. Among the items found were false number plates, extra counterfeit plates, a toy pistol, two crowbars, six master keys, three rolls of suspected cannabis, and other tools that suggested more extensive criminal plans.

“The vehicle has been impounded and is currently in police custody as efforts to trace and arrest the five suspects continue,” the police statement confirmed.

Rising Crime Rates in Kiambu County

Kiambu county has seen a surge in criminal activities in recent months, ranking among the highest in regional crime reports. This incident highlights a recurring trend observed every December, when many urban residents leave their homes to celebrate the end-of-year holidays in their rural villages. Opportunistic thieves often take advantage of this period, targeting unattended properties and shops.

Data shows that burglary rates in Kiambu exceed national averages, with hotspots such as Thika and Githurai experiencing similar trends. These areas mirror patterns seen in coastal regions, where crime tends to spike during festive seasons.

Police Intensify Security Measures

In response to the rising crime rates, the National Police Service has stepped up its efforts to ensure public safety. Patrols have been intensified in high-risk areas, including residential neighborhoods and business districts. Officers are conducting regular foot and mobile patrols, as well as vehicle checks at roadblocks.

Intelligence-driven operations have also become a key component of the strategy. Recent sweeps have targeted drug-related activities and illicit brews, particularly along riverbanks in informal settlements. These measures aim to create a safer environment for residents and visitors alike.

As the holiday season reaches its peak, these sustained efforts are expected to help maintain security and provide a sense of safety for those returning home. Police officials have assured the public that they remain vigilant and committed to preventing further incidents.

With the festive season in full swing, the collaboration between law enforcement and the community remains crucial in maintaining peace and order. The ongoing efforts reflect a broader commitment to ensuring that the joy of the holidays is not overshadowed by crime.
