Flintoff’s Surgeon Meets Faces of Hope

Freddie Flintoff’s Compassionate Journey to Nepal for Life-Changing Surgery

Former international cricketer and beloved television personality, Freddie Flintoff, is set to embark on an emotionally charged new documentary series for ITV. Titled Freddie Flintoff’s Mission: Nepal, the three-part series will follow Flintoff and renowned maxillofacial surgeon Mr Jahrad Haq as they travel to Nepal to provide life-changing facial reconstructive surgery to those in desperate need.

This deeply personal project for Flintoff comes after his own harrowing experience in 2022. While filming for the popular motoring show Top Gear, the 48-year-old suffered severe facial injuries in a car crash, necessitating extensive reconstructive surgery. It was Mr Haq who led the surgical team that helped Flintoff recover.

Now, Flintoff is returning to the screen, not as a participant, but as a witness to the profound impact specialist surgical care can have, particularly in regions where healthcare resources are limited.

A Mission of Humanity and Resilience

Flintoff expressed his motivation for taking on this challenging role: “After my crash, I had access to the best people. Not everyone gets that. If there’s a way to shine a light on it, to use what profile I’ve got for that, then that’s what I’ll do…”

The documentary will see Flintoff traverse the diverse landscapes of Nepal, engaging with patients from all walks of life and of varying ages. He will gain an intimate understanding of their personal stories and the immense challenges they face leading up to their transformative surgeries.

Meanwhile, Mr Haq will be collaborating with the charity Face Facts, an organisation dedicated to performing operations for patients who have minimal or no access to free healthcare services.

The series aims to highlight the tireless efforts of Face Facts in creating a lasting and sustainable positive change within the healthcare system in Nepal.

Clare Cameron, Executive Producer at 72 Films, commented on the significance of the project: “This series is about humanity, resilience and the power of shared expertise. We’re privileged to be working with Face Facts, Mr Haq and Freddie, whose own experiences will bring real empathy and openness to the story.”

Joe Mace, Commissioning Editor – Entertainment, ITV, added, “We are excited to follow Freddie and the team on this journey, one that will combine intimate personal storytelling with extraordinary medical access.”

A New Chapter for Freddie Flintoff

This move to ITV for Freddie Flintoff’s Mission: Nepal marks a significant development in Flintoff’s broadcasting career. Earlier this year, it was reported that he had effectively “defected” to ITV following the conclusion of his final projects with the BBC.

Flintoff’s last engagement with the BBC was the series Field Of Dreams, which aired last year. In that program, he guided a group of young men from Preston, Lancashire, on a cricket tour of India, exploring how the sport could positively influence their lives.

Reports suggest that Flintoff’s future television projects will now be focused with ITV. A source close to the situation commented to The Sun: “This is a huge development as when Freddie signed for Top Gear in 2019, he increasingly started to become a face of the BBC. Although he wasn’t exclusive to the corporation, by early 2022, he delivered Field Of Dreams for BBC One, and had motor renovation show, Chasing Cars, in the pipeline. But by 2023, Top Gear had been slapped on ice and the renovation show is now a distant memory. Field Of Dreams won’t be returning and Freddie has no more projects lined up with the Beeb.”

A BBC spokesperson acknowledged their pride in Field Of Dreams, stating: “We are incredibly proud of Field Of Dreams and, while there are no current plans for it to return, we would like to thank Freddie, the producers and all the contributors for three fantastic series.”

Following his previous appearance on ITV’s Bullseye, it is anticipated that Flintoff will feature in further programming with the channel. His new documentary series promises to be a compelling watch, showcasing his personal journey and his commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of others.
