A Strong Week for Florida State Baseball
It’s amazing what can change in a week. Florida State had a tough stretch, losing to Florida and getting swept by the No. 3 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on the road. However, this week brought a dramatic turnaround as they defeated Stetson and swept the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a three-game series.
Earlier in the week, after the losses against Georgia Tech, I wrote that FSU wasn’t as bad as everyone thought, and Georgia Tech wasn’t as good as everyone thought. That sentiment seems to be holding true as the Yellow Jackets went on the road and lost two of three games against North Carolina this weekend.
The Importance of Matchups
The key takeaway from this season is how much the matchups matter. Don’t get it twisted, Notre Dame isn’t a strong team, and there’s a reason they are nearly .500 with an RPI in the 70s or worse. However, sweeping teams is never easy, especially when FSU didn’t have its usual Sunday starter, Bryson Moore, in action. Instead, Cooper Whited took the mound, and he delivered as he has all year in midweek starts.
On Sunday, the FSU offense overcame a late 4-2 deficit to secure a 6-4 win. The hitting was contagious for the Noles throughout the weekend, and it was a group of players you wouldn’t typically expect to carry the team. Nathan Cmeyla had a huge two-out triple that gave the Noles the lead for good, while Brody Delamiellure hit a two-run home run to tie the game after Notre Dame took an early 2-0 lead after four innings.
A Team Effort
Some credit also has to go to the bullpen, which allowed just two earned runs in six innings of relief. It was a total team effort on both offense and the mound for the Noles. Many players stepped up and contributed to the three wins, showing the depth and resilience of the team.
This performance also provided valuable playing time for some players who may be crucial in the postseason. Brodie Purcell, Chris Knier, Cade O’leary, and Cole Stokes all saw action, giving them the opportunity to gain experience and confidence.
Staying in the ACC Race
The series sweep keeps Florida State in the top four in the ACC standings. They will travel to North Florida on Tuesday before heading out west to take on the Stanford Cardinals. While FSU is favored in the upcoming matchup, there have been some unexpected results in the West this season, so the team will need to be at their best.
Looking Ahead
With a strong week behind them, Florida State baseball is showing signs of improvement and consistency. The ability to bounce back from a tough loss and then dominate a series against a lower-ranked team is a positive sign for the program. As the season progresses, the focus will shift to maintaining this momentum and preparing for the challenges ahead, especially in the postseason.
The team’s recent performance highlights the importance of teamwork, adaptability, and mental toughness. With key players stepping up and contributing, Florida State is positioning itself as a serious contender in the ACC and beyond.
