Footy Star Daniel Saifiti Retires at 30 After Injury Struggles

Daniel Saifiti to Announce Medical Retirement

Dolphins forward Daniel Saifiti is preparing to officially announce his medical retirement following persistent shoulder issues that have prevented him from returning to play in the NRL. The 30-year-old NSW powerhouse underwent surgery last year, but all rehabilitation efforts have failed to restore his fitness to a level where he can compete at the highest level.

Saifiti is expected to address the media on Monday afternoon to formally confirm his decision. His final appearance for the Dolphins came in round eight against Canberra last year, where he was recognized as the club’s standout player after joining in 2025. Prior to that, he played 183 games for Newcastle, establishing himself as a formidable presence in the league.

Throughout his career, Saifiti has represented NSW in seven State of Origin matches and was an integral part of the successful teams that claimed the 2019 and 2021 series. As a proud Fijian, he also played three Tests for the Bati, further showcasing his versatility and commitment to rugby league.

Saifiti’s arrival at the Dolphins was a significant moment for the club, especially after former Brisbane prop Thomas Flegler had been linked with the team the previous year. However, Flegler suffered nerve damage in his shoulder, missing most of the 2024 season and all of 2025. The loss of both Flegler and Saifiti proved to be a major setback for the Dolphins, who struggled to maintain momentum towards the end of the 2025 season.

Key Updates on Other Players

Meanwhile, Dolphins hooker Jeremy Marshall-King is set to make his return to the NRL this week. After recovering from a knee injury, he will take the field for his first game of the season against Canterbury on Thursday night. Marshall-King is expected to share hooking duties with Max Plath, who has been in strong form this season.

In addition to Marshall-King’s return, the Dolphins are also welcoming back five-eighth Kodi Nikorima from suspension. His inclusion is anticipated to provide a boost to the team’s performance and depth.

These developments highlight the ongoing challenges and adjustments faced by the Dolphins as they navigate through the current season. With key players returning and others making difficult decisions about their careers, the club continues to adapt and strive for success in the competitive NRL environment.
