Former Bishop Gorman Star Arrested Days Before NFL Draft

A Rising Star Faces Legal Challenges

Zachariah Branch, a former standout wide receiver from Bishop Gorman High School, found himself in legal trouble early Sunday morning in Athens, Georgia. The incident could potentially impact his prospects for the upcoming NFL draft. Branch was arrested on two misdemeanor charges: obstruction of a law enforcement officer and obstructing a public sidewalk.

According to an Athens-Clarke County police spokesperson, officers were directing a large crowd outside a dance and nightclub to clear the sidewalk as the business prepared to close for the evening. When Branch was directly warned to disperse, he refused to comply. This led to his arrest.

The police report, which spelled Branch’s first name as “Zacharia,” stated that he did not move far enough when an officer asked him to move on the public sidewalk. The report said, “A male, later identified as Zacharia Branch, continued to stand on the sidewalk without making an attempt to move. I continued to give Zacharia Branch verbal commands to move from blocking the sidewalk and advised that if he did not, he would receive a citation for blocking the sidewalk.”

Branch reportedly smirked, then stepped backwards and to the right, but remained standing on the public sidewalk, obstructing free passage and impeding ingress/egress to or from the adjacent places of business. Due to these actions and his failure to comply with multiple verbal lawful commands, he was placed under arrest.

A Promising Career

Branch was the No. 1 wide receiver prospect in the country coming out of Bishop Gorman in 2023. He is also the great nephew of former Raider and Pro Football Hall of Famer Cliff Branch. Before joining Georgia last season, he played two seasons at USC. During his time with the Bulldogs, he totaled 81 receptions for 811 yards and six touchdowns in 14 games.

At the NFL scouting combine in March, Branch dazzled with a 4.35-second 40-time, which helped make up for his 5-foot-9-inch, 177-pound frame. His performance earned him a spot on the NFL.com all-combine team with the sixth-highest athletic score among wide receivers.

Draft Prospects and Future Plans

Branch had a top-30 visit scheduled with the Raiders in April, as mentioned in an appearance on NFL Network. He met with the team at the combine and expressed confidence in his abilities. However, the recent legal issues may cast a shadow over his draft prospects.

His representation did not respond to the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s request for comment, leaving many questions unanswered about his next steps.

Impact on the NFL Draft

The incident has raised concerns about Branch’s character and potential distractions during the draft process. While his on-field performance has been impressive, off-field behavior can significantly influence how teams view a player. With the NFL draft approaching, teams will likely scrutinize such incidents closely.

As the draft date draws near, all eyes will be on Branch to see how he handles this setback. Whether he can recover and prove his worth on the field remains to be seen.
