Panthers Lay Down Premiership Gauntlet in Dominant Roosters Rout
The Penrith Panthers have sent a clear and resounding message to the rest of the NRL: they are, once again, the team to beat. While silverware isn’t handed out in March, the Panthers’ blistering performance against the Sydney Roosters has Panthers faithful already marking their calendars for Grand Final day. After a rare hiccup that saw their four-year dominance snapped last season, Penrith appears hungrier and more formidable than ever, dismantling the Roosters with a stunning 12-minute, four-try blitz on their way to an emphatic 40-4 victory at Allianz Stadium.
Currently sitting at a perfect 3-0, the Panthers have conceded a mere 10 points this season, a testament to their suffocating defence. Their attack, meanwhile, proved virtually unstoppable at times. The highlight reel was undoubtedly graced by Brian To’o’s spectacular early contender for try of the year, while winger Tom Jenkins continued his dream start to the season, bagging four tries, including a breathtaking long-range effort in the second half. It’s a remarkable turnaround for a side that found themselves at the bottom of the ladder after 12 rounds last year, demonstrating the sheer resilience and class of the team from the foot of the mountains as they aim to scale the premiership summit once more.
Even the usually sublime playmaking of Nathan Cleary seems to be evolving, finding new levels of creativity. Meanwhile, Paul Alamoti showcased his blistering pace, appearing as if he was the fastest man on the planet at one stage as he broke through the line to find his halfback. Cleary then delivered a perfectly timed pass to Dylan Edwards, who finished off the move for a memorable try.
The Sydney Roosters are, without question, a quality outfit and are expected to be genuine contenders when the business end of the season arrives in September. However, if they couldn’t get anywhere near Penrith in this encounter, it raises serious questions about the prospects of other teams facing an immovable object that also possesses an unstoppable force in this Panthers juggernaut.

To’o’s Dazzling Grubber Steals the Show
Brian To’o is not typically known for his aerial prowess, rarely scoring tries from high kicks. This might explain his unconventional, ground-hugging approach to scoring an early contender for the season’s most spectacular try. With limited options on the final tackle, the ball found its way to the star winger. In a moment of individual brilliance, he chipped the ball forward, regathered it with deft skill, and then, sensing an opportunity, repeated the manoeuvre.
The second grubber kick proved even more audacious. To’o outpaced Roosters captain James Tedesco, rounding him to collect the ball and dive over for a try that evoked images of a playground game, where a lucky bounce leads to bragging rights for the entire week. While To’o provided the moment of individual magic, it’s Tom Jenkins who is truly making headlines. He has now amassed an incredible eight tries in just three games, reclaiming his spot in the team after a heartbreaking demotion during last year’s finals series.
A 15-Minute Game Changer
The Roosters appeared poised to spring an upset on the premiership favourites when Robert Toia, standing up Origin hopeful Casey McLean, crossed the line in just the fourth minute. McLean was agonizingly close to a second try moments later, but the momentum shifted dramatically from that point.
The turning point came when James Tedesco was penalised for a lifting tackle on his opposite number, Dylan Edwards. From that moment, Penrith seized control of the contest, and the home side simply couldn’t match their intensity or execution.

Mark Nawaqanitawase found himself out of position, leading to a try down the short side for the Panthers. He then followed up with a rushed pass that was swiftly punished by Tom Jenkins, who strolled over for his second try of the match. It wasn’t for a lack of trying from the Roosters; they managed four line breaks in the first half alone. However, Trent Robinson’s charges were unable to convert their opportunities against a Penrith defence that treats its defensive line with almost religious reverence. Even the formidable spine of Tedesco, Sam Walker, Reece Robson, and Daly Cherry-Evans couldn’t find a way to break down the Panthers’ resolve. The latter, Daly Cherry-Evans, is now set to face his former club next week at 4 Pines Park in what promises to be an intriguing encounter.
