Their story began in 2012 when McIlroy was dating tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. At the time, Stoll was working as a PGA transport official and played a crucial role in getting McIlroy to the Ryder Cup in Medinah, Illinois, after he overslept. She arranged a police escort to ensure he arrived on time, which ultimately allowed him to participate in the tournament.
Stoll and McIlroy initially maintained a friendship, but their relationship eventually blossomed into something more. They began dating in late 2014, keeping their romance private during the early stages. “I am very happy in my love life,” McIlroy told The Times in 2015. “We haven’t really been putting it out there.”
A Love Story Rooted in Friendship
One of the things McIlroy has often highlighted about his relationship with Stoll is that they were friends first. “The thing I love about our relationship is that we were friends before anything romantic happened,” he told the Irish Independent in 2017. “There was no judgment from day one, which is huge, because that’s very hard to find for someone in my position.”
The couple became engaged in Paris in 2015, although a recent terrorist attack in the city made McIlroy reconsider the proposal. Despite this, they decided to go ahead with the trip and ultimately, he proposed as planned. Their wedding took place in April 2022 at Ashford Castle in County Mayo, Ireland.
Keeping Privacy and Career Separate
After their marriage, McIlroy’s career continued to flourish, while Stoll chose to remain out of the public eye. He has consistently supported her decision to keep their private life separate from his professional endeavors. “Erica has been around me quite a lot at tournaments, but we have really just tried to keep it low-key,” he said after their engagement.
This preference for privacy also influenced McIlroy’s decision to join the Netflix series Full Swing. He only agreed to participate after production met his conditions, which included keeping the cameras away from his home, car, and family.
The couple welcomed their daughter, Poppy, in August 2020. However, their relationship faced another challenge last year when McIlroy filed for divorce in May, just weeks after their seventh wedding anniversary. “Rory McIlroy’s communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed,” a statement from his team said. “They stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible.”
Just a month later, McIlroy called off the divorce, explaining in an interview with The Guardian that he and Stoll had realized their best future was as a family. “Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together,” he said.
A Unified Family at the Masters
Despite the turbulence, the family remained united. Stoll and Poppy were by McIlroy’s side at the 2025 Masters earlier this year. The trio participated in the annual Par 3 contest, with Poppy showcasing her talent on the course. On April 13, Stoll stood by the 18th green as her husband made history, winning against Justin Rose and becoming one of only six professional golfers to achieve a career Grand Slam.
Since then, the family has continued to appear together at various golfing events, demonstrating that even after facing significant challenges, they have found a way to rebuild and move forward.
