Toddler’s Transplant Heart Allegedly Frozen in Dry Ice, Leading to Life Support
A devastating turn of events has plunged a young family into despair, with allegations that a two-year-old boy’s life-saving transplant heart was ruined by improper freezing during its transit. The toddler, identified locally as Tommaso from Naples, was placed on life support after his newly transplanted organ was reportedly damaged during an eight-hour journey across Italy.
Tommaso had been battling a severe heart condition that progressively worsened, making a transplant his only hope. The critical surgery took place on December 23rd. However, shortly after the procedure, doctors discovered the donated heart was compromised, necessitating immediate placement on life support.
The child’s distraught mother, Patrizia Mercolino, has publicly appealed to Pope Francis, pleading for his assistance in securing a new heart for her son.
Investigation Underway into Organ Transport Mishap
Italian authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the incident. The primary focus is on whether the donated heart was mistakenly packed with dry ice, which can reach temperatures as low as -80°C, instead of standard refrigeration ice. Such extreme cold could have inflicted severe freeze burns and irreparable tissue damage, described by sources as “carbonisation.”
Mrs. Mercolino shared her anguish in an emotional television interview: “My life is now dominated by pain and the desire to have my baby back home. I appeal to the Pope to help find a new heart for my son. That’s all I want.” Her legal team is actively contacting hospitals across Europe in a desperate bid to find a suitable replacement organ.

Tommaso had been on a waiting list for a heart transplant since birth due to cardiomyopathy, a progressive disease that causes the heart muscle to thicken, impairing its ability to pump blood effectively.
The donor heart for Tommaso was sourced in December, following the tragic drowning of a four-year-old boy in a swimming pool accident in Bolzano, located in the Italian Alps.
The organ was transported to the Monaldi Hospital in Naples for the transplant. However, the surgery was ultimately unsuccessful, with the heart failing to function as intended.
“They called me after the operation to say, ‘There is a problem — the heart does not start’. I didn’t ask too many questions,” Mrs. Mercolino recounted.
Protocols and Potential Negligence
Initial police investigations revealed that the heart was transported in a standard plastic box, rather than a specialised, temperature-controlled container designed for organ transport. There is strong evidence suggesting the use of dry ice for cooling, a significant breach of established protocols for organ transportation, which are subject to stringent regulations.
Investigators believe that the absence of temperature monitoring devices on the transport box meant that the medical team involved had no way of knowing the organ was plummeting to sub-zero temperatures.
Six Medical Professionals Under Scrutiny
As a result of the ongoing investigations, six medical professionals are now formally under scrutiny. Three separate inquiries are being conducted to pinpoint responsibility across the chain of custody and to examine any potential administrative oversights that may have contributed to the catastrophic failure.
Grave Complications and Uncertain Future
While Tommaso continues to cling to life with the aid of life support machines, his situation has become increasingly complex. Doctors at the Bambino Gesu paediatric hospital in Rome, which is affiliated with the Vatican, have expressed grave concerns. They have indicated that the prolonged reliance on life support is now triggering secondary complications, including damage to the boy’s lungs, liver, and kidneys. These additional health issues reportedly make a second heart transplant an unacceptably high-risk procedure.
“I hope those doctors are wrong,” Mrs. Mercolino stated, her voice filled with a desperate, yet fading, hope. The family’s ordeal highlights the critical importance of meticulous protocols in organ donation and transport, where even the slightest oversight can have life-altering, and potentially tragic, consequences.
