Giddey’s stunning NBA draft lottery triumph

Australian Star Josh Giddey and the Chicago Bulls Make Big Gains in NBA Draft Lottery

Australian star Josh Giddey and the Chicago Bulls emerged as one of the big surprises in the NBA draft lottery on Monday morning. Expected to pick ninth in what many are calling one of the best drafts in NBA history, the Bulls managed to jump up to fourth position, despite only having a 20 per cent chance of achieving this feat.

This move opens up exciting possibilities for the team, as they now have the opportunity to select one of the four projected superstars in this year’s draft class. These players include AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer, and Caleb Wilson. For Giddey, who signed a $150 million deal with the Bulls in 2025, any of these players could complement his game perfectly.

Cameron Boozer or Caleb Wilson are expected to be the players available for the Bulls at the fourth pick. Both are scoring power forwards who could seamlessly integrate into the team’s strategy alongside Giddey.

Washington was the overall winner of the draft lottery, converting their 14 per cent chance at the No.1 pick. They are likely to land AJ Dybantsa, which would allow them to pair him with veteran all-stars they acquired last season, such as Anthony Davis and Trae Young, assuming both remain in Washington.

Indiana Pacers Face Disappointment

Indiana, on the other hand, was the clear loser of the draft. They traded their pick to the Los Angeles Clippers during the season in exchange for centre Ivica Zubac, along with a 2029 first-round pick and guard Benedict Mathurin.

The pick was protected from one to four, meaning if it had fallen within the first four selections, the Pacers would have kept it. They had a 52 per cent chance of that happening, but instead, they ended up with the fifth pick, which was handed over to the Clippers.

The Pacers had a rare chance to take a top draft pick this year after star Tyrese Haliburton tore his Achilles in last season’s NBA Finals. They effectively gambled on rolling a 52 per cent chance at a top-four pick, hoping to bring in Zubac and have Haliburton ready for 2026. Unfortunately, this gamble did not pay off.

Other Teams’ Outcomes

Similarly, Brooklyn and Sacramento both tanked their seasons in hopes of securing a top-four pick, but ended up with sixth and seventh positions respectively.

Aussie Dyson Daniels and his Atlanta Hawks will take the eighth pick in the draft. This came about through a trade with New Orleans last year, which provided the Hawks with a valuable tool to build their team as they aim to compete next season.

Changes to NBA Draft Lottery Rules

The NBA is set to change the draft lottery rules next season to discourage tanking, flattening the odds for the worst teams. This move aims to create a more balanced competition and reduce the incentive for teams to intentionally lose games.

Washington, Utah, and Memphis all achieved their goals from their tanking seasons this time around, ending up with the top three picks. The Bulls’ unexpected jump up to fourth place disrupted Indiana, Brooklyn, and Sacramento’s plans.

Outside of Chicago, the lottery results favored the tanking teams this year. This follows the previous season when Dallas shocked everyone by jumping up to the No.1 pick with just a two per cent chance of doing so.
