Ethiopia’s Government Ensures Continuous Food Aid for Displaced Communities
In a recent statement, the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission (EDRMC) emphasized its commitment to providing uninterrupted humanitarian food assistance to citizens living in temporary shelters across the country. The commission specifically highlighted efforts in the North West Zone of the Tigray Region, where displaced individuals are receiving consistent support.
The EDRMC has strongly refuted claims circulating on social media that suggest displaced people are being neglected in terms of aid distribution. According to the commission, these allegations are misleading and do not reflect the actual conditions on the ground. In particular, residents of the Hitsats temporary shelter in Asgede Woreda have been receiving “complete and uninterrupted humanitarian food assistance.”
Food distribution has remained a continuous effort throughout the year, with no interruptions reported. The commission noted that from September to December 2018, residents at the Hitsats shelter received regular aid without any disruptions.
Over the past four months, a total of 14,413 displaced individuals have been benefiting from the assistance provided at the shelter. The numbers fluctuated slightly each month, with 16,775 people receiving food in September, 18,290 in October, 17,813 in November, and 14,413 in December. These figures include beneficiaries from neighboring shelters as well.
The EDRMC also reported that during this period, a total of 11,406 quintals of food were distributed. This included essential items such as wheat, sorghum, pulses, and cooking oil. The overall value of the aid provided exceeded 257 million Birr.
Despite these efforts, the commission acknowledged that challenges persist in delivering humanitarian assistance under the region’s interim administration. However, the federal government has expressed willingness to provide additional support if requested by local authorities.
The statement further emphasized that ensuring aid reaches displaced communities as intended is the responsibility of the regional interim administration and local authorities. It added that these entities are also tasked with identifying and addressing any gaps in the distribution process at the regional and local levels.
