Netflix is making waves with a major shift in its plans for a new project that could redefine how audiences experience the magical world of Narnia. This time, it’s not just another update on a new release, but a bold reimagining of the classic fantasy series by Greta Gerwig.
The film, which was originally set to be released in IMAX theatres this Thanksgiving and then move to Netflix on Christmas Day, has now been pushed back to February 12, 2027, for a wide theatrical release. The movie will then arrive on Netflix on April 2, 2027. Sneak previews will begin on February 10, 2027, exclusively in IMAX. While the exact reason for the delay hasn’t been officially confirmed, reports suggest that a cast member was reportedly injured, causing production to be delayed by six weeks.
Gerwig, who is directing the film, shared her excitement about the project in a statement:
“Working with Netflix to bring this film to life has been extraordinary, and Imax continues to be an incredible partner. I cannot wait for people to see the film in theaters on February 12 and on Netflix on April 2.”
She also reflected on her childhood connection to the story:
“I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life.”
What to Expect from the Film
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is based on the 1955 novel of the same name by C.S. Lewis. It tells the story of how Narnia was created. Children Digory and Polly are magically transported by rings into new worlds. They witness Aslan creating Narnia, accidentally bringing the evil Queen Jadis into Narnia, and planting an apple tree that protects the new land and whose magic heals Digory’s sick mother.
Gerwig’s vision promises a blend of wonder, emotion, and spectacle, potentially transforming how audiences engage with The Chronicles of Narnia on screen. The film is produced by Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, Vincent Sieber-Smith, and Gerwig herself.
A Star-Studded Cast
The cast includes a mix of newcomers and established actors. David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell will star alongside Emma Mackey, known for her role in Barbie, Carey Mulligan from The Great Gatsby, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith from Hamlet. Additionally, James Bond actor Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep, from The Devil Wears Prada 2, will join the ensemble.
With Netflix’s aggressive theatrical push and a cast that blends fresh faces with veterans, the film is poised to be more than just another adaptation—it could mark a bold new beginning for the Narnia franchise.
The Future of Narnia
As anticipation builds, this reimagined journey into Narnia could win over a whole new generation while reminding long-time fans why Narnian magic never really fades. With its unique approach and star-studded cast, the film is set to make a significant impact.
