Hanoi Woman Detained Over Neighbor Dispute Fueled by Son’s Disruptive Behavior
Hanoi, Vietnam – Authorities in Hanoi have detained a 44-year-old woman, identified as Nguyen Thi Van Anh, on suspicion of disturbing public order following a physical altercation with a neighbor. The dispute, which escalated into an alleged assault, reportedly originated from the neighbor’s persistent complaints about the disruptive behavior of Anh’s son.
The Hanoi Police Department’s Investigation Police Agency placed Anh under criminal detention on Sunday, citing her alleged verbal abuse, hair-pulling, and slapping of her neighbor during a confrontation at their apartment complex.
The Incident Unfolds
According to initial police reports, the victim, identified only as Hang, suffered a concussion and soft-tissue injuries to her head and chest wall. However, a subsequent forensic examination found no visible injuries, bruising, or swelling, assessing the injury rate at 0%. Despite the lack of severe physical harm, the police stated that the incident had a negative impact on public opinion and disrupted security and public order within the residential area.
Investigators traced the roots of the conflict to complaints lodged about the actions of Anh’s son, a sixth-grade student. Neighbors reported that the boy frequently engaged in disruptive activities, including repeatedly ringing doorbells, banging on doors, and teasing residents within the apartment building.
Hang, who resides in the apartment adjacent to Anh’s family in the CT5-ĐN2 building on Tran Huu Duc Street, My Dinh 2 Ward, had reportedly voiced her concerns about the son’s behavior in the apartment complex’s group chat. This communication is believed to have provoked Anh’s anger.
The confrontation occurred last Thursday evening, around 8 p.m., as Hang was returning home from work. Upon reaching her apartment door, Anh and her husband allegedly called out to her, inquiring if she had any “opinions” about their family. Before Hang could respond, Anh reportedly emerged rapidly, hurled insults, and slapped Hang across the face.
As Hang stepped back, the altercation intensified. She claims her hair was pulled, and her head was struck multiple times. The physical dispute is said to have lasted for approximately five minutes.
A History of Disturbances
Hang shared her experiences, stating that she has been a resident of the building since 2017 and has frequently endured disturbances. Beyond the harassment attributed to Anh’s son, Hang also cited issues with the neighboring family, including the consistent scattering of numerous pairs of shoes in the hallway and regular, loud karaoke sessions.
She indicated that she had previously reported these recurring problems to both the building management and the local residents’ committee, but these efforts did not lead to a resolution. To document the issues and ensure her own safety, Hang had installed a camera outside her apartment door.
Fear and Relocation Plans
The aftermath of the incident has left Hang and her child feeling apprehensive. She expressed her intention to rent a different apartment once she is discharged from the hospital, citing ongoing fear of further conflict with her neighbors. The incident highlights the challenges faced by residents in maintaining peace and order within shared living spaces, particularly when inter-neighbor disputes escalate.
