The recent AFL clash between Hawthorn and Sydney at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has been marred by an unsavoury incident, with Hawthorn’s dynamic young player, Nick Watson, reporting that Sydney Swans supporters were seen throwing full soft drink cans and bottles onto the field. This behaviour has cast a disappointing shadow over the sport and has prompted an investigation by the AFL.
Speaking on Nova FM on Friday morning, Watson recounted the startling events that unfolded after he kicked the final goal of the match, a moment that would typically be met with cheers but instead saw projectiles raining down. He described seeing full cans of Coke Zero being hurled towards the players by fans in the stands.
“They were throwing Coke Zero cans out there … I saw one just go straight past me,” Watson told Nova on Friday. “I dunno what happened with the guy but … it just landed right next to us. Lucky it didn’t hit any players, but yeah, a few players saw it. I mean, I was giving them heaps, but I’m not sure a Coke Zero bottle to the face in return would’ve been nice.”
The AFL has a well-established precedent for dealing sternly with such disruptive conduct. In a previous incident earlier in 2024, a Carlton supporter received a lifetime ban from all AFL and AFLW matches after throwing a water bottle that caused an injury to goal umpire Steven Piperno during a game between the Blues and the Saints. This demonstrates the league’s commitment to player and official safety.
The AFL has since released a statement addressing the MCG incident:
“The AFL is working with the MCG to investigate the matter. A patron threw a soft drink bottle at the final siren towards Hawthorn players. The alleged offender was not from the Swans cheersquad and his identity is currently unknown. We have the best fans in the world, but throwing objects at players will never be acceptable and if caught, you will lose the privilege of being able to attend the footy. Victoria Police will now investigate the matter with assistance from the MCG, which will provide all relevant information.”
This statement highlights several key points:
- Ongoing Investigation: The AFL and the MCG are actively collaborating to identify the individual responsible.
- Scope of the Incident: The thrown object was a soft drink bottle, and it was directed towards Hawthorn players as the final siren sounded.
- Unidentified Offender: Crucially, the AFL has confirmed that the person responsible was not part of the official Sydney Swans cheersquad, and their identity remains unknown at this time. This suggests the act was carried out by an individual fan.
- Zero Tolerance Policy: The league reiterated its stance against the throwing of objects, emphasizing that such behaviour is unacceptable and will result in severe consequences, including the loss of the right to attend future games.
- Police Involvement: Victoria Police have been brought in to assist with the investigation, with the MCG providing all necessary information to aid their inquiries.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with attending live sporting events. While passionate support is a cornerstone of Australian Rules Football, it must always be exercised within the bounds of respect and safety. The AFL’s swift response and collaboration with authorities underscore the seriousness with which they view such breaches of conduct, aiming to ensure that the integrity and enjoyment of the game are protected for all involved. Fans are urged to report any suspicious or inappropriate behaviour they witness at games to venue staff or security.
