Governor Kathy Hochul has pledged significant state support for the ambitious expansion of Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, New York, a move deeply rooted in her personal history with the iconic venue. The governor’s connection to Shea’s dates back to her childhood, with cherished memories of attending screenings of “The Sound of Music” with her parents at the theater. This enduring affection played a pivotal role when Brian Higgins, the president and CEO of Shea’s and a long-time acquaintance of Governor Hochul, approached her for additional state funding for the theater’s $34.6 million expansion project.
“He had me at yes,” Governor Hochul remarked, indicating her immediate willingness to assist.
On Monday morning, Governor Hochul formally announced an allocation of an additional $5 million towards the expansion. This latest contribution, when combined with previous state funding, brings New York’s total investment in the project to a substantial $18.5 million.
More Than Just Sentiment: An Economic Powerhouse
While acknowledging the personal significance of Shea’s, Governor Hochul emphasized that the state’s financial commitment is far from purely sentimental. She highlighted the theater’s crucial role as an economic driver, not only for Buffalo’s downtown Theatre District but for the entire central business district.
“It supports so many,” she stated, underscoring the widespread benefits of Shea’s operations. “We are writing the next chapter for the Theatre District.”
The economic impact of Shea’s Performing Arts Center is undeniable. The venue attracts over 350,000 visitors annually, generating an economic ripple effect estimated to be north of $100 million. This substantial influx of people and capital directly benefits local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and other establishments within the surrounding area.
A Vision for the Future: The Expansion Project
The expansion, designed by Carmina Wood Design, is strategically situated on the Pearl Street side of Shea’s. This ambitious undertaking involves the construction of a new four-story addition, spanning approximately 25,600 square feet. The modern expansion is set to enhance the visitor experience and operational efficiency of the historic theater.
Key features of the new addition include:
- A New Box Office and Lobby: Designed to streamline ticketing and provide a more welcoming entry point for patrons.
- Modern Lounges: Offering comfortable spaces for patrons to relax before and during performances.
- Expanded Concession Stands: To better serve the large volume of attendees.
- Upgraded Restroom Facilities: Addressing a common need for improved amenities in large venues.
- Elevators: Enhancing accessibility for all patrons.
- Dedicated Special Event Space: Providing opportunities for private functions, corporate events, and community gatherings, further diversifying Shea’s revenue streams.
Officials anticipate that this significant expansion project will reach completion by mid-2027. Governor Hochul described the endeavor as “a massive undertaking,” acknowledging the scale and complexity involved in revitalizing and expanding such a historic landmark. The investment is expected to ensure Shea’s remains a vibrant cultural and economic hub for generations to come, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of Buffalo’s revitalized downtown.
