Australia’s Flying Roos Dominate in Bermuda
Australia’s Flying Roos team, a formidable force in the world of competitive sailing, delivered an impressive performance during the recent SailGP event in Bermuda. This victory marked their third win of the 2026 season, showcasing their dominance on the water.
The team’s success was witnessed by one of their celebrity co-owners, Ryan Reynolds. Known for his role as a co-owner of the football team Wrexham and part of the Orto Capital stake in the Alpine F1 team, Reynolds joined the crew to see the Aussies’ remarkable performance firsthand.
With this latest win, Australia extended their lead at the top of the leaderboard by 10 points, putting them ahead of the United Kingdom. The victory highlights the team’s consistent performance and strategic approach throughout the season.
Tom Slingsby Leads the Charge
Set against the backdrop of the Great Sound, driver and CEO Tom Slingsby proved why he is considered the gold standard in the sport. After securing two of the four qualifying fleet races, Slingsby led the Australian team to a decisive victory in the winner-takes-all final against Germany and Spain.
Slingsby expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “We’re actually getting the results the team feels they deserve, and we are gelling so well as a unit. We nailed it today, and nailed it yesterday, so it’s great to get the result.”
He also acknowledged the importance of having Goobs (Ian Jensen) as part of the crew, saying, “Honestly, the feeling I have about this team, and I know we’re just coming off a win, it just feels like wherever the game takes us, we’ll be strong, and a huge part of that is having Goobs as a part of our crew.”
A Weekend to Forget for Nathan Outteridge
While the Australian flag flew high, another Aussie legend had a challenging weekend. Nathan Outteridge, a two-time Australian Olympic medallist leading the Swedish entry, finished the event with zero points due to a series of technical failures that hampered his campaign.
Despite the 10-point lead and the momentum from three season wins, Slingsby remained cautious about the long season that defines SailGP. He said, “We’re in a good position after today, but you’ve seen what’s happened to other boats today. We’re not counting our chickens early.”
