From Kerry to Hollywood: An Irishman’s Reign at The Beverly Hills Hotel
When Hollywood’s elite descend upon Los Angeles for the glitz and glamour of the Academy Awards, one particular establishment stands out as a beacon of luxury and a trusted sanctuary. Overseeing this iconic venue, where stars mingle and moments become history, is John Scanlon, a proud Irishman hailing from Listowel in County Kerry. As the General Manager of the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel, Scanlon is no stranger to the demands of Oscar week, a period when the hotel buzzes with unparalleled energy.
The Beverly Hills Hotel, affectionately known as ‘The Pink Palace,’ is more than just a place to stay; it’s a landmark steeped in Hollywood lore. It’s a regular haunt for A-listers, including being a favoured Sunday brunch spot for none other than Leonardo DiCaprio. For Scanlon, managing such a prestigious hotel, particularly during one of the most significant events on the entertainment calendar, is a role he embraces with a unique blend of professionalism and genuine Irish hospitality.
Scanlon’s journey into the world of high-end hospitality began at the Shannon College of Hotel Management. His final year saw him gain invaluable experience in London, followed by a significant role in the opening of The Lanesborough in 1991. He spent 14 years there before transitioning to another esteemed London establishment, The Dorchester, over two decades ago. His transfer to The Beverly Hills Hotel in 2022 marked a new chapter, one he sometimes reflects on with a sense of wonder, pondering how he arrived at such a pinnacle of his career.
Reflecting on his success, Scanlon attributes a significant portion to his Irish heritage. “Being Irish with a little added Irish charm and a propensity to offer a warm, genuine care that comes with being Irish in hospitality definitely helped,” he shared. The core values instilled in him during his upbringing in County Kerry have, he believes, been instrumental throughout his professional life. This inherent warmth and dedication to service are particularly crucial when catering to the demanding needs of celebrities during the frenetic Oscar season.
A Hub of Hollywood History and Glamour
Oscar week at The Beverly Hills Hotel is an exhilarating time, adding another layer to the hotel’s already rich tapestry. “Of course, it is an exciting time as we add to our story, the story of the hotel and its place in the folklore of Hollywood that has been built up over a century,” Scanlon explained. The hotel has long been a symbol of California’s allure and mystique, having hosted countless individuals who have shaped the landscape of film, fashion, art, and culture. “We feel grateful to play a small part in the biggest night in Hollywood. This hotel is forever synonymous with cinema and those who bring it to life.”
The presence of so many Irish individuals making their mark in the glamorous world of Hollywood fills Scanlon with immense pride. “I am also proud to see Irishmen and women excelling in the arts, cinema, business or any walk of life… I am proud to be Irish and of the Irish people visiting us to attend the Oscars,” he stated. The added bonus of managing The Beverly Hills Hotel while witnessing this Irish success story further amplifies his sense of accomplishment.
Over the years, ‘The Pink Palace’ has been a haven for a constellation of stars, including Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Frank Sinatra, Jennifer Lopez, Elton John, and Nicole Kidman. Its iconic status is further cemented by its appearances in beloved films such as California Suite, The Way We Were, and Saving Mr Banks.

Scanlon emphasises that guests arriving at the hotel are immediately aware of the legend they are entering. “The pink façade, the red carpet, the curve of the driveway… These are all part of a history the world already knows. Yet each arrival feels personal.” For 114 years, the hotel has been instrumental in shaping Hollywood’s imagination and atmosphere. From the distinctive candy-striped ceiling of the Polo Lounge to the tranquil cabanas and secluded bungalows, the hotel’s spaces are imbued with echoes of conversations that have defined eras, exuding an effortless confidence befitting its legendary status.

The Beverly Hills Hotel continues to be a destination where icons return, where stories are preserved, and where the spirit of the city finds its reflection. For anyone considering a visit, Scanlon encourages a stop by. You never know which luminary you might encounter within its hallowed halls.
