Howe Dismisses Guimaraes Transfer Rumours as “Nonsense” Amidst Derby Buildup
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has firmly refuted reports suggesting that club captain Bruno Guimaraes is engaged in advanced discussions with Manchester United regarding a summer transfer. Howe unequivocally labelled these claims as “absolute nonsense,” expressing his frustration with ongoing transfer speculation that he believes distracts from the team’s immediate priorities.
The Brazilian international, who recently returned to Tyneside following rehabilitation for a hamstring injury in his homeland, has found his comeback overshadowed by rumours originating from South America linking him with a move to Old Trafford. This latest bout of speculation adds to Howe’s recent concerns, which have also encompassed similar rumours involving key players such as Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento, and Lewis Hall, particularly in light of the club’s pursuit of Champions League qualification.
“I don’t even know how to respond to that. I don’t even think I should because it’s a waste of my energy,” Howe stated emphatically.

He continued, “I’m not going to be impolite because I don’t think it’s the forum to do that in. For me, it’s a nonsense story. Bruno’s our captain, he’s fully committed. He’s injured at the moment, his only focus is coming back to fitness. For me, it is not the time to think about it. In the summer, you can understand those stories a little bit more because the transfer window is open. To say our captain is in discussions with another club is totally disrespectful to Bruno more than anything else. He is totally committed here.”
The transfer speculation surrounding Guimaraes emerges as a significant distraction for the Magpies as they approach a pivotal weekend. The team is striving to recover from a demoralising 7-2 defeat against Barcelona earlier in the week. More pressingly, however, they are determined to exorcise the painful memories of their recent derby loss to Sunderland in December.
Preparing for Derby Showdown: Lessons from Past Encounters
The previous encounter against their arch-rivals saw Newcastle suffer a narrow 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light on December 14th. A Nick Woltemade own goal ultimately handed their newly-promoted rivals the crucial bragging rights, a result that has left a lasting sting.
Reflecting on that particularly painful experience, Howe acknowledged its lingering impact. “The fall-out of it was long and painful. It certainly did not help us,” he admitted.
He elaborated on the psychological weight of the derby fixture: “There is an extra weight with the fixture in the sense of, you know if you don’t perform, there will be a large and painful baggage that goes with you. We don’t want that. It affects future performances and affects the emotion and feeling of the whole city. We want all the positives of the game that can carry us on a new run and a new wave of optimism, so you know you’re going into the game on a knife-edge.”

Despite the inherent pressure, Howe believes this intensity can be harnessed positively. “In some respects, that can bring out the best in your players. It’s all the positive emotions we want, because it could be a turning point in our season very much for the better.”
Howe’s Approach to Motivation: Inspiring, Not Intimidating
Despite the immense significance of the upcoming derby, the Newcastle boss confirmed he would not be leveraging the negative memories of the previous Wearside performance to exert undue pressure on his squad. Howe, who is hopeful that midfielder Sandro Tonali will be fit after sustaining a groin issue at the Nou Camp, outlined his preferred motivational strategy.
“I’m not sure drumming that message into them is a positive or the right thing to do. It’s a very negative message,” Howe explained. “I would much prefer to go with the positive message because we need to inspire the players, not put fear into them.”
This approach underscores Howe’s commitment to fostering a positive and resilient team environment, even when faced with intense scrutiny and the lingering disappointment of past results. The focus remains firmly on the present and the future, with Guimaraes’ commitment to the club being a cornerstone of that vision.
