The Box Office Showdown: Avengers: Doomsday vs. Dune: Part Three
On December 18, two highly anticipated films—Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three—will face off in a major box office battle. This clash has sparked considerable interest among fans and industry observers alike. Notably, Dune: Part Three has secured an IMAX exclusivity window, a privilege that Marvel Studios missed out on for Avengers: Doomsday. This development has led to a significant shift in the way studios are approaching premium cinematic experiences.
Disney’s Counter Strategy: Infinity Vision
In response to this situation, The Walt Disney Company introduced Infinity Vision, a certification system designed for premium large-format theaters. This initiative aims to help audiences identify the best available screens for Disney films. To qualify for Infinity Vision, theaters must meet specific criteria, including having large screens, laser projection systems, and premium audio setups. This makes it a potential alternative to traditional IMAX screenings.
However, the concept of Infinity Vision has not been universally welcomed. Natasha Fernandes, CFO of IMAX, described it as a “pure marketing play” during the company’s earnings conference call. She argued that audiences already have access to premium formats such as Dolby and PLF screens, which offer similar quality to what Infinity Vision claims to provide.
“From our view, it’s a pure marketing play to try and offset the fact that they don’t have an IMAX platform or brand for Avengers: Doomsday. It doesn’t offer the consumer anything that they couldn’t get yesterday,” she stated.
The Power of IMAX
IMAX has long positioned itself as the leader in premium cinema. Fernandes emphasized that the company’s relationship with filmmakers is unmatched, and that the format significantly enhances the theatrical experience. This is not just about the screen size or sound quality—it also involves how films are shot using IMAX cameras, which can create a more immersive viewing experience.
“Marvel fans we believe are among the savviest, most discerning movie goers out there. And there is a reason why we are the undisputed leader in premium cinema worldwide. No one can match our relationships with filmmakers,” she added.

It is well-documented that IMAX screens drive higher ticket prices, attract premium audiences, and create a stronger perception of a film’s value. This is evident from the success of previous Avengers films, which opted for the unique IMAX experience.
