Indiana DC fires back at Ty Simpson’s criticism, targets Alabama fans

A Bold Claim and a Defiant Response

In the aftermath of Indiana’s impressive 38-3 victory over Alabama in the College Football Playoff’s Rose Bowl, Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson made a surprising statement about the Hoosiers’ defensive strategy. Despite the loss, Simpson insisted that he had a clear understanding of what Indiana’s defense was going to do on every play. However, he admitted that it didn’t matter because the team couldn’t find a way to counter it.

Simpson, who suffered a fractured rib during the game and missed most of the second half, shared his thoughts on former Ohio State and Alabama safety Caleb Downs’ podcast. He described the defensive scheme as predictable, stating, “From my point of view, I was like, they don’t do much. I was like, they do the same thing every down. So when I got the ball, I knew exactly what was going to happen. They just didn’t mess up, bro. They were in the exact same spot they were supposed to be. And they were so well coached.”

This bold claim came as a surprise to Indiana’s defensive coordinator, Bryant Haines, who wasn’t impressed by Simpson’s admission. In fact, Haines responded with a tweet that called Simpson’s comments “adorable.” He emphasized that while Indiana’s defense did see everything the Crimson Tide was doing, they managed to exploit those cues effectively.

“[We] also saw everything they were doing, on every single snap… It’s just that we exploited those cues. And didn’t get frozen and crushed by them,” Haines wrote.

Haines took his response a step further by taunting Alabama fans in a follow-up tweet. He questioned the reaction from the fanbase, asking, “That’s all it took to break your entire fanbase?” He added, “Wow.. maybe I should’ve just said ‘Boo’. No apologies, no compliments. Grow up folks. He had a bad take and I said the painful truth. Bounce back better.”

The exchange between Simpson and Haines highlights the intense rivalry and competitive spirit that defines college football. Haines, who has been the defensive coordinator for Indiana for the past two seasons, earned the Broyles Award for the nation’s top assistant in 2026 after leading the Hoosiers to a national title.

Prior to joining Indiana, Haines served as the defensive coordinator for James Madison, where he gained recognition for his strategic mind and coaching abilities.

On the other hand, Simpson, a 23-year-old quarterback, is preparing for the NFL Draft. He has emerged as a strong candidate for a first-round pick later this week. Throughout the 2025 season, Simpson threw for 3,567 yards, tallying 28 passing touchdowns and just five interceptions. His performance included a 64.5 completion percentage, which solidified his place as one of the top quarterbacks in the country.

Despite the loss, Simpson’s comments reflect his confidence in his ability to read defenses. However, the Hoosiers’ defense proved that being able to predict an opponent’s moves doesn’t always translate to success on the field. Their disciplined approach and execution ultimately led to their victory, showcasing the importance of preparation and adaptability in high-stakes games.
