Jackson’s Brace Ignites Senegal’s Afcon Defence

Lions Roar in AFCON Opener as Nigeria Secures Nervy Win

Senegal, the reigning champions, have launched their Africa Cup of Nations title defence with a dominant 3-0 victory over Botswana. Meanwhile, Nigeria, another tournament favourite, kicked off their campaign with a less convincing 2-1 triumph against Tanzania. While both nations are considered strong contenders, only Senegal truly lived up to expectations on Tuesday.

Senegal’s Clinical Display

The Lions of Teranga wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Nicolas Jackson was the standout performer, netting a brace to lead his side to a comfortable win. The opening goal came in the 40th minute, with Jackson converting a swift cross from Ismail Jakobs. Despite facing a Botswana defence that opted for a five-man backline and spent much of the match under pressure, Senegal’s attacking prowess eventually broke through.

Botswana’s goalkeeper, Goitseone Phoko, was instrumental in keeping the scoreline respectable for the Zebras. He made several crucial saves throughout the match, denying Jackson in a one-on-one early on and producing a fantastic stop to thwart Sadio Mané. Pape Gueye also went close for Senegal, firing over the crossbar.

The match was played under challenging conditions, with a heavy downpour creating a wet and cold atmosphere, characteristic of what is shaping up to be one of the wettest and coldest Africa Cup of Nations tournaments to date.

After the break, Botswana showed a brief surge of attacking intent, but this only opened up more space for Senegal’s counterattacks. Jackson doubled his tally in the 58th minute, finishing neatly from an Ismaila Sarr cross. Jackson, who has experienced limited game time at Bayern Munich following his move from Chelsea, demonstrated his predatory instincts. He was eventually substituted in the 78th minute, making way for Cherif Ndiaye, who completed the scoring in the final minute of the match. Phoko continued to be the busiest player for Botswana, as Senegal’s dominance was evident throughout.

Nigeria’s Stuttering Start

In contrast to Senegal’s convincing performance, Nigeria’s opening match against Tanzania was a more tense affair. The Super Eagles, who were beaten finalists in the previous edition, secured a 2-1 victory, but their performance raised some concerns.

Nigeria started brighter and should have taken the lead earlier than they did. Semi Ajayi eventually broke the deadlock in the 36th minute with a header from an Alex Iwobi corner. However, against the run of play, Charles M’Mombwa equalised for Tanzania early in the second half.

The Taifa Stars’ goal seemed to inject a dose of uncertainty into the Nigerian side. While Ademola Lookman responded almost immediately with a well-taken strike to restore Nigeria’s lead, the confidence of the Super Eagles appeared to waver. Star player Victor Osimhen, who had a goal disallowed for offside earlier in the match, expressed his displeasure when he was substituted in the 86th minute. Tanzania had a late chance to snatch a point through Ibrahim Hamad, but Nigeria’s experience ultimately proved enough to see them hold on for the win.

Other Group C Action

Elsewhere in Group C, Tunisia issued a warning to Nigeria with a solid 3-1 victory over Uganda. Elias Achouri was the star for the Carthage Eagles, scoring twice, with Ellyes Skhiri adding a third. Denis Omedi managed a consolation goal for Uganda in stoppage time.

Group D Kicks Off

In Group D’s opening fixture, Congo secured a narrow 1-0 win against Benin, courtesy of an early goal from Theo Bongonda.
