Prominent BNP Leader Fatally Shot in Jashore
Jashore, January 4 – A senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was tragically shot and killed by unknown assailants on Saturday evening in the town of Jashore. The brazen attack, which occurred around 6:45 PM in the Shankarpur area, has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised serious concerns about political violence.
The victim has been identified as Alamgir Hossain, a 54-year-old man and a respected figure within the BNP’s Ward No. 7 organization under the Jashore Municipality. He was serving as the joint general secretary for his ward. Hossain was the son of the late Intaz Chowdhury and a long-time resident of the Shankarpur locality.
According to his elder brother, Jahangir Hossain, Alamgir was en route home on his motorcycle at the time of the incident. He had departed from the Battala area of town and was proceeding towards his residence when the assailants opened fire. The attack took place directly in front of Huda Memorial Academy, a location that witnesses described as relatively busy for a Saturday evening.
Following the shooting, local residents quickly intervened and transported Alamgir Hossain to Jashore General Hospital. Medical professionals at the hospital’s emergency department, led by Dr. Bichitra Mallick, unfortunately, declared him deceased upon arrival. Dr. Mallick confirmed that Hossain was brought to the hospital in a critical state, having sustained a severe gunshot wound to the head. The severity of the injury indicated the targeted and brutal nature of the attack.
Authorities from the Jashore Kotwali Police Station were promptly alerted to the incident. Inspector (Operations) Muminul Haque stated that law enforcement officers were dispatched to the scene of the crime immediately after receiving information about the shooting. The police have cordoned off the area and begun their initial investigation.
The motive behind this fatal shooting remains unclear as the perpetrators are still at large and unidentified. Law enforcement officials are actively pursuing leads and working diligently to piece together the events that led to Hossain’s death.
