Jasmine Harman Shares Mortifying Smear Test Tale, Urges Women to Prioritise Health
A beloved presenter from the popular property show A Place In The Sun, Jasmine Harman, has candidly recounted a deeply embarrassing experience that occurred during a routine cervical screening. The 50-year-old television personality described the incident as one of the “most embarrassing moments of her life,” highlighting the awkwardness that can sometimes accompany essential health checks.
The presenter took to social media to share the anecdote, framing it as an “overshare” but one she felt compelled to discuss to encourage other women to attend their own screenings. “So I’ve just been for my smear test,” Harman explained in a video. “I do go regularly; I think it’s really important to go. And also to share with you an awful story that was so embarrassing that happened on a previous occasion when I was being examined by a male nurse.”

The incident unfolded during a smear test, a vital procedure for women aged 25 to 65 designed to detect and prevent cervical cancer. Harman recounted how, at a particularly intimate moment, the male nurse performing the examination suddenly looked up.

“He looked up and looked at me and said, ‘Oh, I’ve just realised where I recognise you from’,” Harman revealed, describing the moment as “so awkward.” While she acknowledged the mortifying nature of the encounter, she stressed that the crucial takeaway for her audience was the importance of attending these appointments. “Hopefully, you won’t have a bad experience like that. But do go for your smear test!” she urged.
Harman elaborated on her experience in a written post, reiterating that despite the personal embarrassment, the message about health must prevail. “Prepare for an over-share (you know me!) as I describe one of the most embarrassing moments of my life!” she wrote. “Smear tests can be awkward. Sometimes hilariously so… Imagine being recognised from TV mid-way through it.”
The Life-Saving Importance of Cervical Screening
Harman’s primary motivation for sharing her story was to underscore the critical importance of cervical screening. “But the important thing is this: cervical screening prevents cancer,” she emphasised. “It’s not pleasant. But at least it’s quick. And it could save your life.”
She directly appealed to those who might be delaying their appointments: “So if you’ve been delaying yours, here’s your sign to book [it]. And if you’ve got a story that made you cringe or laugh, share it below. The more we talk about it, the less scary it becomes.”

The presenter’s candid confession clearly resonated with her followers, who flooded the comments section with their own memorable – and often humorous – smear test anecdotes. The shared experiences served to further demystify the procedure and highlight the commonality of awkward situations.
A Collection of Cringeworthy Smear Test Stories
Here are some of the relatable stories shared by Jasmine Harman’s fans:
- One user recounted a similarly awkward situation during a gynaecological operation. “I went for an op ‘down below’ as we ladies say and whilst I was being prepared for theatre the male anaesthetist said ‘oh I know who you are – you’re my neighbour my garden backs into yours.'”
- Another shared an instance where a male nurse made an unexpected observation. “I went for one once and the male nurse said ‘oh someone is keen to make an effort today’. I thought what?? I’d sprayed body glitter instead of a feminine deodorant.”
- A particularly amusing tale involved a friend who, in a moment of nerves, used an unconventional substitute for toilet paper. “A friend of mine went for a smear test and while waiting decided she needed a nervous wee. She went but realised too late that there was no toilet paper in the cubicle so she rummaged around in her handbag and found a bit of tissue. She went into the Drs and got on the couch and into position where the Dr took one look and said ‘do you always keep your stamps there?'”
These stories, while humorous in retrospect, underscore Harman’s point that open discussion can alleviate anxiety surrounding these necessary medical appointments.
