Jeffries Creek Restoration Plan in Florence County

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – Florence City and County officials are working to restore Jeffries Creek after a sewage overflow contaminated the waterway and left a strong sewage odor in the area. The creek runs throughout Florence County. County leaders said they are highlighting the importance of nature spots as industrial growth increases in the area.

“As we are really excited about all of the industrial growth, all of the jobs we create, it’s equally as important to be sure we’re conserving as much as we’re using,” said Jerry Yarborough, Florence County Council chairman.

Florence County and the city are working together to reduce pollution and restore Jeffries Creek. One way includes making it more accessible to everyone through the addition of docks and launch pads.

“This area is really a gem that we will keep,” said Lethonia Barnes, Florence mayor. “This is a gem that we need to preserve, that we cannot lose. While we are growing, we have to grow smart and preserve the Jeffries Creek, and enhancing it makes a better quality of life.”

Barnes said the enhancements make the possibilities endless for the city. “We can have paddle boat races, we can have nature trails, we can have families just enjoying the view in morning rides. This is a wonderful spot to be in the center of the business of Florence,” said Barnes.

Yarborough said the county supports the effort. “So, as the population grows, as we grow as a community, the county and city together, it’s important we allow access, it’s important we improve these conservation areas so that all walks of life can come and enjoy them,” said Yarborough.

Barnes said the city and county will create a board to oversee the creek, which will allow them to apply for state and federal funding for the projects.
