Missouri basketball forward Jevon Porter has officially entered the transfer portal, according to a team spokesperson who confirmed the news to the Columbia Daily Tribune on Sunday. This move comes as Porter seeks a potential new opportunity in his college basketball career.
To be eligible to play next season, Porter will need a favorable ruling from the NCAA regarding a medical redshirt waiver. This is crucial for him, as he has already used his four years of eligibility in the sport. His college career included one season with the Missouri Tigers last year, following two seasons at Pepperdine and one at Loyola-Marymount. In total, Porter has played 95 games throughout his college career.
However, his senior season with the Tigers was cut short after just 12 games due to an undisclosed injury. As a result, the power forward is now seeking a medical waiver that could grant him an additional year of eligibility.
NCAA medical waivers are based on specific criteria. A player must have sustained an injury before the midpoint of a team’s season to qualify. Porter met this requirement, as his final game for the Tigers was on December 14 against Bethune-Cookman, which occurred just over a month into a four-month season.
The second criterion, however, poses a challenge for Porter. To be eligible for a medical redshirt, a player must have participated in 30% or fewer of their team’s games during the season they were injured. Porter appeared in 12 out of Mizzou’s 33 games last season, which translates to 36.3%. This exceeds the 30% limit, making it likely that his request for a medical redshirt will be denied.
If the initial decision is not in his favor, Porter will have the opportunity to appeal the ruling. The NCAA will then review his case in more detail. If he receives a favorable outcome, it is expected that he would use this additional year of eligibility elsewhere.
In his 12 games with Missouri, all in nonconference play, Porter averaged 6.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. He shot 25.0% from three-point range and 49.1% from the field. These numbers highlight his contributions on the court, even though his time with the Tigers was limited.
Technically, Jevon Porter is the fifth Mizzou player to enter the transfer portal this offseason. However, he is the second player seeking a waiver for an additional year of eligibility. Jacob Crews is also pursuing a waiver for his redshirt freshman season at North Florida, which could allow him to play a seventh season in the sport if approved.
Other players who have entered the portal include guards T.O. Barrett, Anthony Robinson II, and Sebastian Mack. Two of Mizzou’s three portal commitments so far have been forwards. Tennessee big man Jaylen Carey and Kansas forward Bryson Tiller are joining the Tigers’ frontcourt next season, along with Providence wing Jamier Jones.
The transfer portal opened on April 7 and will remain open for new entries through April 22. This deadline applies to players who intend to transfer and submit their paperwork. However, teams can still sign players who have entered the portal database after this window.
