Jolie’s Countdown: Freedom Looms as Kids Turn 18

Angelina Jolie is reportedly making plans to bid farewell to the United States, with sources suggesting a permanent relocation abroad is on the horizon. The acclaimed actress and humanitarian is said to be eagerly anticipating a significant life change once the youngest of her six children reaches the age of 18.

This pivotal moment is expected in July, coinciding with the 18th birthday of twins Vivienne and Knox. For Jolie, this milestone signifies the potential end of any remaining custody arrangements with her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, paving the way for her long-held desire to leave Los Angeles and establish a new life elsewhere.

Reports have consistently pointed to Jolie’s intention to depart the US. In August 2025, it was noted that she was preparing her historic Los Angeles home for sale, a move that hinted at impending changes. A source close to the star previously told People magazine that Jolie “never wanted to live in LA full-time” and felt she “didn’t have a choice because of the custody arrangement with Brad.” The insider added that Jolie “plans to relocate as soon as Knox and Viv turn 18 next year.”

Jolie herself has spoken openly about her circumstances. In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she stated, “I am here because I have to be here from a divorce, but as soon as they’re 18, I’ll be able to leave.” She elaborated on her desire for her children to have a sense of privacy, peace, and safety, which she feels is sometimes compromised in Los Angeles. She expressed a longing to reconnect with the “humanity that I found across the world” and indicated plans to spend considerable time in Cambodia, as well as visiting family members globally.

Her commitment to her children’s proximity to their father was also a factor in her past decisions. In 2021, she revealed to British Vogue that she had purchased the former estate of filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille specifically “to be close to their dad, who is only five minutes away.”

However, the relationship between Jolie and Pitt has been marked by ongoing disputes, particularly concerning their children. Several of their children have publicly distanced themselves from their father. Shiloh, their eldest biological daughter, filed a petition to legally drop “Pitt” from her name upon turning 18 in May 2024, a change that was officially approved later that year.

Vivienne Jolie-Pitt also followed suit in May 2024, omitting “Pitt” from her name in the playbill for a theatre production of The Outsiders, in which she collaborated with her mother. Further evidence of this estrangement emerged in 2023 with a video of Zahara’s induction into the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at Spelman College, where she introduced herself as “Zahara Marley Jolie.” This followed a resurfaced 2020 social media post from their son Pax, who referred to his father as a “world-class a—hole” and a “despicable human being” in a Father’s Day tribute.

The former couple’s legal battles have extended beyond custody and into financial matters, most recently concerning the sale of their French winery, Château Miravel. The vineyard, the site of their 2014 wedding, has become a significant point of contention. Reports indicate that a judge ruled in favour of Pitt in a dispute over private communications related to Jolie’s sale of her share of the property.

Jolie and Pitt, who met and began their relationship on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004 while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston, jointly purchased the winery during their union. Following their split in 2016, which led to Jolie filing for divorce, they have been embroiled in protracted legal proceedings concerning both their children and their assets.

They were declared legally single in 2019, with their divorce finalised in 2024. However, the winery, and specifically Jolie’s 2021 decision to sell her half to the Stoli Group, has continued to be a source of conflict. Pitt initiated legal action in February 2022, seeking damages and a declaration that the sale be voided. He has accused Jolie of attempting to “inflict harm” by selling her stake to a company associated with Russian oligarch Yuri Shefler.

The ongoing legal entanglements, coupled with Jolie’s expressed desire for a life away from the constant scrutiny and demands of Hollywood, suggest that a significant international move is not only a possibility but a deeply desired outcome for the actress. Her focus on her children’s well-being and her own personal fulfillment appears to be driving this potential new chapter.
