Jonah Hill Reveals Director Was ‘Buck Wild’ on Film Debut

Jonah Hill has shared some candid reflections on his experience working with David O Russell on the 2004 film I Heart Huckabees. The actor, known for his role in Superbad, described the director as “f***ing nuts at the time,” while also expressing admiration for his creative vision.

Hill’s debut in I Heart Huckabees marked a significant moment in his career, but it was also a period of intense tension on set. The film, which features a star-studded cast including Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin, is most notably remembered for an explosive argument between Russell and Tomlin that was later leaked online.

During a live recording of the Smartless podcast, Hill spoke about his time on the set of the film. He described Russell as “buck wild” during that period, though he emphasized that he still considered the director to be “awesome” and “one of the best directors ever.”

“I’ve had my own moments, trust me,” Hill said, reflecting on the chaotic environment. “He was screaming at Lily Tomlin. It’s online and s***. And he’ll talk about it.”

The incident reportedly occurred on Hill’s first day on set, where he witnessed Russell arguing with a member of his creative team. “Everyone’s screaming at each other,” he recalled.

Russell’s reputation for clashing with actors is well documented. He has been linked to incidents such as allegedly headbutting George Clooney during the production of Three Kings (1999) and causing Amy Adams emotional distress during the making of American Hustle (2013).

In a 2010 interview, Russell expressed regret over his on-set behavior. “Of course, they’re terrible embarrassing moments and they make me be more vigilant to never ever repeat such a thing,” he said. “It’s not like I say, ‘Gee, that’s how I work.’ They are just terrible, bad days for me and for the actor together.”

Despite these challenges, Russell has maintained that I Heart Huckabees was a difficult project for him. He once referred to it as his least favourite film. Three years after its release, footage of the argument between Russell and Tomlin surfaced online, capturing the intensity of the moment.

In the clip, Tomlin can be heard shouting at Russell: “Do you know what the f is going on, period? F you! I’ve had it up to here. Who’s reacting to what, for god sakes? F you, motherfer! F you! F you! F you! Get the thing together! F you!”

Tomlin later told the Miami New Times that she hadn’t seen the clip before its release but still held a fondness for Russell. “There was a lot of pressure in making the movie,” she said. “David was under a tremendous amount of pressure. He’s a very kind of freeform guy, anyway. I never hold a grudge; I never feel bad about anything.”

Reflecting on the incident in 2015, Tomlin mentioned that she and Russell initially clashed but made up within a few hours. “By then, I was like stoic in my suffering. But we’ve overcome it. It dissipates and it’s gone,” she said.

Russell, for his part, claimed that the set was “one big party, except for maybe one day.” “The party just went right on past that day, but then that was the day that got remembered,” he told IndieWire.

The story of I Heart Huckabees remains a fascinating chapter in both Hill’s and Russell’s careers, highlighting the unpredictable nature of filmmaking and the complex relationships that often develop behind the scenes.
