Joshua’s UK Return: Friends’ Burial Today

Anthony Joshua Returns to UK After Tragic Nigerian Car Crash

Former two-time world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has returned to the United Kingdom following a devastating car accident in Nigeria that resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals close to him and his team. The incident, which occurred on Monday, December 29, also left Joshua with minor injuries.

The boxer was reportedly discharged from the hospital on New Year’s Eve, with reports confirming his subsequent flight back to the UK. The accident claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, who were described as close friends and team members of the renowned athlete.

The funerals for Ghami and Ayodele are scheduled to take place at the London Central Mosque on Sunday.

Legal Proceedings and Defence of the Driver

The driver of the vehicle involved in the fatal collision, identified as 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been formally charged by Nigerian police. The Ogun State Police Command confirmed on Friday that Kayode faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a licence.

Kayode has been granted bail in the sum of N5 million and is currently remanded pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions. The court has adjourned the case until January 20.

In a public statement, Kayode’s 19-year-old son, Ifeoluwa Adeniyi, has vehemently defended his father, attributing the accident to mechanical failure and an illegally parked truck. According to Ifeoluwa, his father was driving within the speed limit when the vehicle’s brakes failed.

“Dad is not a fast driver; he was following the speed limit when the brakes failed,” Ifeoluwa stated. “He said he was pushing the pedal, but nothing was happening. He’s been driving for Anthony for three years; he’s a good driver. It’s not his fault; if the truck wasn’t parked there illegally, this wouldn’t have happened.”

A Last-Minute Seat Change Credited with Joshua’s Survival

The lawyer representing Kayode, Olalekan Abiodun, has revealed a detail that may have saved Joshua’s life: a last-minute seat swap. Abiodun explained that the journey commenced in Lagos, and initially, Joshua had occupied the front passenger seat. However, the driver requested Joshua to switch seats.

“I understand that the journey started in Lagos and that initially Anthony had got into the front seat, but the driver asked him to swap seats,” Abiodun told reporters. “He did this because Anthony is a big fellow, and he couldn’t see the wing mirror properly, so he asked him to move, and he sat behind the driver. From what I understand, Latif was in front and then changed seats with Anthony.”

The collision occurred when the Lexus SUV, carrying Joshua as a passenger, impacted a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Makun. At the time of the incident, Joshua was en route to visit relatives in Sagamu for New Year celebrations. This unfortunate event transpired merely 10 days after Joshua’s decisive knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami.

Official Condolences and Ongoing Investigations

Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State have both issued statements expressing their gratitude for the public’s prayers and support following the incident. They also conveyed their appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his assistance during this challenging period.

Both state governments extended their deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased, characterizing the accident as a profoundly painful and unfortunate event. They offered prayers for the eternal rest of the departed souls.

The Nigerian police continue their investigations into the precise circumstances that led to the fatal crash. The outcome of these investigations is expected to shed further light on the events of that tragic day.
