Kano Gov Celebrates Shekarau’s APC Return

Political Shift in Kano: A Major Move for the APC

The political landscape in Kano State has taken a significant turn with the return of former Governor and Senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This development has been welcomed by Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, who sees it as a major boost for the party in the region.

In a statement released on Sunday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf expressed his satisfaction with Shekarau’s decision. He emphasized that the former governor’s return would further strengthen the APC’s structure and political influence in Kano, especially in preparation for upcoming elections.

Strengthening the Party’s Position

According to the statement, a date will soon be announced for the formal reception of Shekarau into the APC, following consultations with the party’s national secretariat. The governor noted that the APC in Kano has seen growing support and consolidation across different parts of the state.

He highlighted that the APC remains a dominant political force in Kano and is well-positioned for future electoral contests. “The party in Kano continues to witness growing support and consolidation, positioning itself as the most dominant political force in the state,” the statement read.

Yusuf also mentioned that the party is battle-ready to win all elective positions in the forthcoming elections. He cited unity and strategic alignment as key factors driving confidence among members. The governor assured party members and supporters that the leadership is committed to strengthening internal cohesion and expanding its grassroots base across the state.

Call for Unity and Mobilization

The governor urged party faithful to remain steadfast and continue mobilizing support as preparations begin for future political contests. His message was clear: unity and active participation are essential for the party’s success.

Shekarau’s Resignation from PDP

Earlier reports indicated that Shekarau formally announced his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday. In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, the former governor stated that his exit from the party took immediate effect.

“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today,” he wrote. Shekarau explained that the decision followed extensive consultations within his political group, adding that it was part of plans to continue his political journey on another platform.

“This decision follows wide and extensive deliberations within my political group, to pursue our political career in a different political party,” he stated. He also expressed appreciation to party leaders at the ward level, praying for continued guidance in their service.

“I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship,” he added.

Impact on Future Elections

Shekarau’s return to the APC is expected to reshape political calculations in Kano ahead of the next election cycle. His experience and influence could significantly impact the party’s strategies and performance in upcoming contests.

This move underscores the dynamic nature of Nigerian politics, where alliances and loyalties can shift rapidly. As the APC strengthens its position in Kano, the political arena is set for an exciting period of competition and change.
