Kanye West Postpones Concert in Marseille Amid Controversy
Rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, has been forced to cancel his upcoming concert in Marseille, France. This decision comes just weeks after his appearance at the Wireless Festival in the UK was also canceled. The French authorities have expressed their intention to ban the event, which was scheduled to take place at the Stade Vélodrome on June 11, leading Ye to make the difficult choice to postpone the show indefinitely.
In a statement shared on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Ye said: “After much thought and consideration, it is my sole decision to postpone my show in Marseille, France until further notice.” He added, “I know it takes time to understand the sincerity of my commitment to make amends.”
Ye, who changed his name in 2021, faced significant backlash earlier this month when he was banned from entering the UK due to his history of antisemitic remarks. The French Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, pledged to explore all possibilities to ensure that the Marseille concert would not proceed as planned, according to his office.
Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan had already opposed Ye’s visit to the city, which is known for its rich multicultural heritage and long history of immigration. Payan stated, “I refuse to let Marseille be a showcase for those who promote hatred and unabashed Nazism.” He added, “Kanye West is not welcome at the Vélodrome, our temple of community and home to all Marseillais.”
Ye has faced widespread criticism for his antisemitic comments and his admiration for Adolf Hitler. His controversial actions include releasing a song titled Heil Hitler and advertising a swastika T-shirt for sale on his website last year. These incidents led to Australian officials canceling his visa in July following the release of the single.
In January, Ye issued an apology through a letter published as a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal. In the letter, he attributed his behavior to his bipolar disorder, stating that he fell into “a four-month long, manic episode of psychotic, paranoid and impulsive behaviour that destroyed my life.”
On X, Ye added, “I take full responsibility for what’s mine but I don’t want to put my fans in the middle of it.” He emphasized, “My fans are everything to me,” and concluded with, “Looking forward to the next shows. See you at the top of the globe.”
