KIIS FM Breakfast Carnage Looms: Expert’s Stark Warning Post-Kyle & Jackie O

Radio Expert Warns of Potential Ratings Meltdown for KIIS FM Amidst Host Shake-Up

A stark warning has been issued to KIIS FM concerning the potential fallout from the recent departure of its long-standing breakfast hosts, Kyle and Jackie O. The veteran radio duo’s exit from the airwaves this month has sparked concern among industry insiders, with one prominent radio expert predicting a significant ratings slump for the station.

Speaking on the Game Changers Radio podcast, Craig Bruce, a former boss of the embattled shock jock duo, drew parallels to a similar situation that resulted in a dramatic ratings crash for another Australian radio network. Bruce suggested that KIIS FM’s breakfast slot could face a similar fate, with a substantial number of listeners potentially following the departing hosts, leading to a massive drop in audience share.

The scenario Bruce referenced involves the Melbourne-based radio personality Christian O’Connell. Last year, O’Connell’s breakfast show, which had been Gold Network’s number-one rated program in its timeslot, was slated to be broadcast into Sydney from 2026. This strategic move led to the displacement of long-time hosts Amanda Keller and Brendan Jones from their established breakfast slot. After a remarkable two-decade run, the duo was shifted to the Drive time slot, broadcasting between 3 pm and 6 pm.

However, this transition proved to be a ratings disaster for Gold. O’Connell’s new breakfast broadcast experienced a significant decline, shedding an astonishing 3.6 percentage points in ratings. This resulted in a total audience share of just 6.1 points. This substantial drop was the most significant observed in any timeslot across the survey period and contributed to a broader decline in Gold’s overall ratings throughout the day, with the exception of the Drive time slot.

The “Carnage” Ahead for KIIS FM?

With this precedent in mind, Craig Bruce speculated that KIIS FM could be heading for a remarkably similar outcome in the coming months. “Christian O’Connell is a harbinger for what is to come for KIIS,” Bruce stated. He elaborated on the potential for widespread disruption, explaining, “When a new show replaces a heritage show – Amanda and Jonesy had 20 years together – there is carnage. And there will be carnage.”

Further insights into the potential impact came from Mike Fitzpatrick, a guest host on the podcast and former head of Triple M. Fitzpatrick offered his perspective on where the audience might migrate following the sacking of Kyle and Jackie O. He outlined several possibilities for the future of KIIS FM’s morning radio show.

One potential outcome, Fitzpatrick suggested, is that a segment of the audience might remain loyal to the station’s breakfast slot out of sheer habit, irrespective of who is at the microphone. “There’s going to be some portion of the audience that’s fundamentally a dial position habit listener, not a K and J-specific loyal listener,” he commented.

The Real Threat: A Loyal Following for the Hosts

However, Fitzpatrick identified a more significant concern for KIIS FM: the possibility that the breakfast audience’s loyalty was not to the station itself, but rather to the presenters, Kyle and Jackie O. This scenario presents the biggest red flag for the network.

“Which is why they’ll follow K and J, and if K and J turn up on podcast or a YouTube channel, their devoted listeners will go looking for them,” Fitzpatrick warned. This suggests that the station could lose not just listeners, but a dedicated fanbase that is intrinsically linked to the personalities of its former hosts.

These grim predictions emerge as the first metropolitan radio ratings survey of the year revealed that “The Kyle and Jackie O Show” had maintained its leading position on FM breakfast radio in its final survey period before its controversial exit. The survey, which spanned from January 18 to February 28, concluded just eight days after the infamous on-air argument between Jackie ‘O’ Henderson and Kyle Sandilands on February 20. This incident ultimately led to the show being pulled from the air on March 3.

Despite the incident, the duo’s share of the total radio listening audience during the survey period remained unchanged from the final results of 2025. They retained their impressive 12.7 per cent rating. However, a closer look at the cumulative figures for Sydney revealed a loss of 60,000 listeners during this specific survey period, hinting at the initial signs of audience attrition even before their permanent departure. The coming months will undoubtedly be a critical period for KIIS FM as they navigate the challenge of replacing a highly successful and established breakfast program.
