Radio Shockwaves: Kyle and Jackie O’s Departure Set to Unleash “Carnage” on KIIS FM
The Australian radio landscape is bracing for significant upheaval following the abrupt departure of long-time breakfast hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson from KIIS FM. Industry veterans are predicting widespread “carnage” as loyal listeners grapple with the end of “The Kyle and Jackie O Show,” a fixture on the airwaves for years.
The termination of both Sandilands’ and Henderson’s lucrative contracts, reportedly worth a staggering $100 million combined, has sent shockwaves through the industry. Craig Bruce, who served as program director for the duo during their decade-long tenure at 2Day FM, believes the fallout for KIIS FM could be substantial.
“When a new show replaces a heritage show – Amanda and Jonesy had 20 years together – there is carnage. And there will be carnage,” Bruce stated on the Game Changers Radio podcast. He highlighted the precedent set by the cancellation of the Amanda Keller and Brendan Jones breakfast show on Gold FM, suggesting KIIS FM could experience a similar ratings decline.
Echoing these sentiments, former head of Triple M, Mike Fitzpatrick, noted that a significant portion of the audience is driven by habit. “There’s going to be some portion of the audience that’s fundamentally a dial position habit listener, not a K and J-specific loyal listener,” Fitzpatrick explained. “Which is why they’ll follow K and J, and if K and J turn up on podcast or a YouTube channel, their devoted listeners will go looking for them.”
The decision by the Australian Radio Network (ARN) to terminate Sandilands’ KIIS FM contract on Tuesday night followed an on-air altercation with Henderson. This move comes at a time when the duo’s radio ratings had already shown signs of decline.
Shifting Tides in Sydney and Melbourne Ratings
The first radio survey of the year revealed a dip in listenership for the now-defunct “The Kyle & Jackie O Show.” In Sydney, the program experienced a loss of fans, ultimately finishing in a disappointing eighth place in Melbourne, trailing behind rivals Jase and Lauren on Nova 100.
Jackie Henderson’s unexpected absence from the airwaves on February 20, which followed a public on-air disagreement with Sandilands, is believed to have contributed to the decrease in numbers. During the survey period spanning January 18 to February 28, Henderson was off-air for a full week, and the show subsequently saw a decline of 60,000 listeners.
Despite these recent challenges, the duo concluded their time at KIIS FM in a strong second position in the competitive Sydney market, capturing a 12.7 per cent share. However, they were still outranked by Ben Fordham of 2GB, who topped the survey with a lead of four percentage points.

In Melbourne, a market where “The Kyle & Jackie O Show” had struggled since its debut nearly two years ago, the program had shown some marginal improvement in ratings. The survey indicated a slight gain of 0.1 percentage point, bringing their market share to a less-than-impressive 5.1 per cent. Their cumulative audience in Melbourne stood at a modest 403,000 listeners.
Meanwhile, their direct competitors on Nova 100, Jason Hawkins and Lauren Phillips, saw their breakfast show surge into second place, achieving an 11.1 per cent market share with a jump of 2.2 per cent. The Melbourne market was ultimately led by 3AW’s Breakfast with Ross and Russel show, which commanded an 18.9 per cent share.
The Official Announcement and the Road Ahead
The official announcement of “The Kyle & Jackie O Show’s” conclusion came on Wednesday morning. Kyle Sandilands released a statement at 7 am, confirming that KIIS’s parent company, ARN, had terminated his 10-year contract. Just an hour later, ARN chief executive Michael Stephenson disseminated an email to staff, formally announcing the axing of the popular breakfast program. The industry now waits with bated breath to see how KIIS FM will navigate this significant shift and what the future holds for Sandilands and Henderson.
