A Rapid Rise from High School to the NBA
It’s incredible to reflect on how quickly life has transformed for University of Houston guard Kingston Flemings. Just a year ago, he hadn’t even graduated from high school, and now he’s preparing to declare for the NBA draft. His journey has been nothing short of remarkable.
“I just wanted to win so bad, and that’s the reason I chose here,” Flemings said. “My main goal was just to find a way I can help his team and winning.”
This time last year, he was still in high school, but now he’s taking his talents to the next level. On Sunday, he officially declared for the NBA draft, marking a significant milestone in his career.
“It’s crazy how fast it went,” Flemings reflected. “I remember coach talking about it, like, ‘You don’t really see the end of the tunnel, but it’s going to go by so fast.'”
A Team Player with Big Ambitions
Flemings is known for his humility, unselfishness, and dedication to his team. He’s not focused on individual stats but rather on helping his team succeed.
“I just want anyone I play with to enjoy playing with me,” he said. “Whatever the coach is going to need, that’s what I’m gonna go out there and do. You know, I don’t have a one-track mind. I don’t care about scoring that much, I don’t care about assist or anything like that, as long as we’re winning; that’s all I care about.”
His mindset has made him a valuable asset to the University of Houston team. Head coach Kelvin Sampson has noticed this quality in him.
“The first thing that jumped out to me was how selfless and loyal he is,” Sampson said. “He’s the ultimate team player.”
A Bright Future in the NBA
Flemings’ skills and character have caught the attention of NBA teams. He is projected to be taken in one of the top-10 picks, but Sampson believes he’s even more valuable than that.
“I don’t think he’s a top-10 pick, I think he’s a top five pick if I was an NBA team, I’d draft him top five,” Sampson said.
Despite the excitement surrounding his future, Flemings remains grounded. He says he is a Cougar for life and credits his head coach for helping him grow both as a player and a person.
“Just to see these people and just the players and how they grow when they’re here, you know, whether they’re here for one year or two years, three years or four, he just grows everyone in different ways and in ways that’s going to stick with them for life,” Flemings said.
A Coach’s Perspective
Sampson emphasizes the importance of developing players not just as athletes but as individuals.
“We have a responsibility to develop him,” Sampson said. “He’s not a number to us. He’s not stats on a page to us. He is a living, breathing human being.”
The coach is proud of Flemings’ achievements and is excited to see where his journey takes him.
“I’m proud of Kingston. Am I upset about it? Heck, no. I’m proud of him,” Sampson added.
The Final Chapter
As June 23 approaches, the world will soon find out where Flemings lands in the NBA draft. One thing is certain: the team that selects him will gain not only a great player but also an exceptional person.
“I’ll be a Cougar for life for sure. So thank you,” Flemings said, expressing his gratitude and commitment to the University of Houston.
