Saturday morning, Kinston residents laced up their sneakers in support of the 5th annual Nell Pittman day. This event has become a meaningful tradition for the community, honoring the resilience and strength of Nell Pittman, a beloved local figure.
In 2020, Nell Pittman, who is 78 years old, was severely beaten by a man using a metal baseball bat after he attempted to steal her car. The incident occurred outside of Jessie Bell’s Soul Food restaurant, and to date, no one has been arrested for the attack. The trauma left Nell Pittman with lasting impairments, including being non-verbal, and deeply affected the entire community.
Despite the tragedy, Nell’s family and friends have remained steadfast in their support. Over the past five years, they have organized a fundraiser in her honor, bringing the community together to celebrate her life and perseverance. Nell, who is the mother of four, also considers her son-in-law, Tah’ron Cannon, as an additional child in her life. He shares how the small moments continue to give them hope.
“Whenever she gives us that smile, it brightens up my day,” Tah’ron said. “I always celebrate the small wins, and just seeing her light up is always the small wins for me.”
The event is not only a tribute to Nell but also a way for the community to come together and show solidarity. In honor of Nell, who had walked a mile just before the attack, residents participated in a symbolic walk around the parking lot seven times, totaling one mile. This act of remembrance became a central part of the celebration.
The day included various activities for all ages, such as fun games for children, raffles, prizes, and food from local vendors and organizations. Community leaders also showed their support, with Councilman Sammy Aiken and Councilman Antonio Hardy making special appearances at the event.
For those interested in supporting the cause, there are ways to contribute and help continue the legacy of Nell Pittman. Whether through donations or spreading awareness, every effort plays a role in keeping her memory alive and supporting the community that stands behind her.
