KKR Snag Muzarabani for IPL 2026, Rahman Out

Blessing Muzarabani, the towering Zimbabwean fast bowler, has made a significant decision regarding his cricketing commitments, opting to pull out of the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) to join the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This move comes after Muzarabani, who had a standout performance in the recent T20 World Cup, was initially unsold at the PSL auction but later roped in by Islamabad United as a replacement. However, the lure of the IPL and a direct offer from KKR has led him to prioritise the Indian T20 league.

Muzarabani is set to return to India, a country where he recently showcased his bowling prowess during the T20 World Cup. His team, Zimbabwe, achieved remarkable victories against established cricketing nations like Sri Lanka and Australia, propelling them into the Super Eights stage of the tournament.

A World Cup Campaign to Remember

During the T20 World Cup, which spanned across India and Sri Lanka, Muzarabani proved to be a formidable force with the ball. In the six matches he participated in, the 6-foot-8-inch pacer scalped an impressive 13 wickets. This tally placed him among the leading wicket-takers, with only India’s Jasprit Bumrah and mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy ahead of him, both having claimed 14 wickets each in their respective outings. This performance highlights Muzarabani’s current form and his ability to compete at the highest level.

KKR’s Bowling Reinforcements

The Kolkata Knight Riders are clearly keen on bolstering their bowling attack, and Muzarabani’s inclusion signals their intent. He is expected to arrive in Kolkata by Tuesday, March 17, to link up with his new teammates. This signing comes at a crucial time for KKR, who recently had to part ways with Bangladeshi seamer Mustafizur Rahman. Rahman was secured for a substantial INR 9.20 Crore but is no longer available.

Furthermore, KKR’s other significant fast-bowling acquisition, Matheesha Pathirana, is still on the mend from an injury sustained during the recently concluded T20 World Cup. Therefore, Muzarabani’s availability and current form are a welcome boost for the franchise.

An IPL Champion Joins the Ranks

Adding another layer to Muzarabani’s move is his previous, albeit brief, association with the IPL. He joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru late last season as a temporary replacement. Although he didn’t get the opportunity to play a match, he was part of the squad that ultimately clinched their maiden IPL title. This means KKR is bringing in a player who has already experienced the winning environment of the IPL, and one who is currently in red-hot form.

Muzarabani’s T20 Credentials

At 29 years old, Blessing Muzarabani boasts a wealth of T20 experience. He has featured in 137 T20 matches throughout his career, amassing 155 wickets. His bowling average stands at an impressive 22.76, coupled with a strike rate of 18.50. What is particularly noteworthy is his economy rate of 7.35. This is a commendable figure, especially considering his role as a frontline bowler who often operates during the crucial powerplay overs and the death overs, where batsmen are typically looking to score quickly.

KKR is scheduled to commence their IPL 2026 campaign on Saturday, March 29. Their opening match will be a challenging encounter against the Mumbai Indians, taking place at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Muzarabani’s arrival and integration into the KKR squad will be keenly watched as the team aims for another successful season.
